TWO TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER DUMFRIES FIRE

Firefighters in breathing apparatus prevented the well-developed fire spreading beyond the kitchen.

Two people were taken to hospital following a fire at a house in Dumfries on Sunday night (15 March).

Firefighters in breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze, which broke out within the kitchen of the Catherine Street property shortly before 10pm.

A crew from Dumfries Community Fire Station reached the scene approximately six minutes after the first of several 999 calls to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), with a second appliance arriving minutes later.

Watch Manager Kevin James, the incident commander, said: “The ground floor kitchen was well-alight but thankfully everyone was accounted for.

“Four firefighters entered the property wearing breathing apparatus and using high pressure jets they successfully confined the fire to the kitchen.”

He added: “Four adults had exited the building prior to our arrival and two of them appeared to be suffering from minor effects of breathing in smoke.

“We administered oxygen until an ambulance arrived and they were transferred to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

“Our crews continued working to ventilate the property, check for any hidden hot spots and make sure the fire was fully out.”

SFRS crews frequently attend incidents where early warning of the emerging danger proves crucial to people escaping serious injury and gives firefighters the chance to prevent flames, heat and smoke causing damage throughout a home.

Watch Manager James explained: “Many people just don’t realise the speed fire spreads at – a small fire can engulf a room in moments.

“If it happens in a home then every second counts. If you have working smoke alarms then it’s likely everyone will be able to get out and we’ll be able to get there in time to save lives and limit damage.

“Not having this early warning is inviting tragedy. We need everyone to make sure their homes and those of their friends and family are protected.”
