Kirkcudbright Launches UK’s First Official “Wife” Carrying Championship – With Winners Heading to Finland
Couples, friends, gym partners and work colleagues are being invited to take part in one of the world’s most eccentric sporting events as entries officially open for the UK’s first ever Official “Wife” Carrying Championship.
Taking place in Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway on Sunday 19 July 2026, the championship will see competitors race across a specially designed obstacle course carrying their chosen partner through water, obstacles and challenges in a test of strength, teamwork and determination — all while trying not to fall over laughing.
You can win the person you are carrying’s weight in BEER!
Champions don’t just win bragging rights, they also win:
● The carried person’s weight in beer
● A place at the 2026 World Wife Carrying Championship in Finland
● Contribution towards travel costs to the World Championships
The event forms part of the popular annual Kirkcudbright Country Fair and organisers hope teams from all corners of the UK will travel to the harbour town to compete for the official UK title.
Despite the light-hearted concept, Wife Carrying is a genuine international sport originating in Finland, where the World Wife Carrying Championships are held annually. The winning UK team will secure a place at the World Championships in Finland — and organisers say they’ll help the champions get there. And, in keeping with tradition, the winners will also receive their partner’s weight in beer.
Importantly, organisers stress that the “wife” does not actually need to be a wife.
Teams can be any gender pairing and participants can race with a spouse, friend, teammate, colleague or “work wife”, provided both are over 18 and the carried participant weighs at least 49kg.
Competitors can choose between three carrying styles:
- Piggyback
- Fireman’s carry
- The famous Estonian carry — where the carried partner hangs upside down with their legs over the carrier’s shoulders
Rob Linden, one of the event organisers, said:
“We wanted to bring something genuinely different, memorable and fun to Kirkcudbright, and this certainly does that.
“It’s a brilliant mix of sport, teamwork and entertainment. People immediately laugh when they hear about it, but once they see what’s involved, they realise it actually takes real fitness, coordination and strategy.
“We’re hoping teams from all over the UK will enter, whether competitively, to fundraise for charity, or simply to take part for fun. It’s going to be a fantastic spectacle and a great family day out.”
The event is expected to draw significant attention due to its unusual format and family-friendly atmosphere, with the championships taking place alongside the wider Country Fair featuring entertainment, food, activities and attractions throughout the day.
Organisers say team places are limited for the inaugural year and expect strong interest following the launch.
For those feeling particularly ambitious, there is also a world record to chase. The fastest Wife Carrying time ever recorded is 56.9 seconds, set by Estonian competitors Margo Uusorg and Sandra Kullas in 2006. We can’t wait to make a new UK record!
