LOCAL MSP Joan McAlpine has responded to a national call to support local produce by placing a weekly order with Dalbeattie butcher Scott Carson.
Food and Drink Fortnight organisers asked politicians and the public to think about how they buy food and to “change one thing in their daily life to support local producers”. They are then requested to tweet their plans using #onethingfortnight by Scotland Food and Drink.
The nationwide event supports and promotes Scotland’s produce and the people who grow, make, cook and sell it.
Ms McAlpine said:
“Carson’s is a first class butcher and I would love to pop in every week, but I live quite a distance away so it’s not always possible – this way I am guaranteed to buy and eat local.
“I heard Scott delivered to a pub/restaurant near my home – The Steamboat Inn – so I immediately placed a weekly order. It’s so convenient especially because I work away from home in Edinburgh for parliament. Often the fridge gets empty because I am away and the temptation can be just to grab something late at the supermarket, which isn’t good for local traders in our high streets.”
Joan ordered mince, sausages, bacon and ribeye steak “as a treat”.
This year’s Food and Drink Fortnight ends on 17 September and will ask the Scottish public to think about how much Scottish food and drink they buy and consume.
It is managed by the industry leadership body Scotland Food And Drink and funded by The Scottish Government. The government has set a target of growing Scotland’s food and drink sector to £30bn by 2030.
