Police Investigate Dumfries Disturbance After Two Men Injured

Detectives are continuing enquiries following a disturbance, resulting in two men being injured, in Dumfries.

Just after midnight (00.01am) on Wednesday, 25 May, 2022, police received a report of a disturbance at a flat in Church Street, Dumfries. Emergency services attended and two men, aged 35 and 29, were taken to hospital. One man aged 29, has been transferred to hospital in Edinburgh.

A man, aged 35, has been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

Officers are carrying out door-to-door enquiries and will be checking for any relevant CCTV footage.

Detective Inspector Graeme Robertson said: “We believe there were other people in the flat around the time of the disturbance and I am appealing to them to contact us as they could have vital information which could assist our enquiries. I would also like to ask local residents who may have heard a disturbance or who may have seen something suspicious to get in touch with us. It’s imperative we establish exactly what has happened here.”

National Highways Geared Up For Jubilee Bank Holiday With Almost 1000 Miles Of Roadworks Lifted

Motorists travelling South of the border to meet family and friends to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee are set to enjoy smoother journeys over the extended bank holiday weekend, with National Highways lifting almost 1000 miles of roadworks.

It will mean that 98 per cent of England’s major A-roads and motorway network will be free from roadworks.

The roadworks will be removed from England’s major A-road and motorway network by 6am on Wednesday 1 June and not put back in place until Monday 6 June.

And with motorists set to make the most of the long weekend, National Highways is urging those travelling to play their part in keeping traffic flowing by ensuring vehicles are roadworthy.

Research commissioned by National Highways shows that only one-in-six drivers check their tyres before setting off on a long journey, meaning some could be taking to the road with a potentially serious vehicle defect.

To underline the risks, separate figures show that a fifth of motorway breakdowns are caused by worn or incorrectly inflated tyres.

Dave Harford, Traffic Officer for National Highways, who patrols the M5, M42, M50 and other major routes, said: “We expect the roads to be busy with people looking to make the most of a long weekend. Our traffic officer patrols will be out on the network to help anyone who might get into difficulty, but it’s important people remember to check their vehicle before setting off.
“The last thing anybody wants on the way to their destination is to have a vehicle breakdown. That’s why it’s really important people spend a few minutes checking the condition of their tyres before setting off.”

The advice from National Highways is simple; check your tyre pressure, tread depth and tyre age including the spare, before you set off on a long journey.

Look out for cuts or wear over the full width of the tyre and don’t forget to check the sidewall.

Dave added: “Although the legal limit for tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, we recommend you don’t let the tread get that low. Changing the tyre at 2mm in summer and 3mm in winter is good practice and maintains overall good tyre performance in all conditions. To check your tyre pressure, visit most fuel and service station forecourts, which have an air machine for checking and inflating your tyre pressure.”

If you are stopped by the police and found with illegal tyres, you could receive a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per tyre.

National Highways says simple checks are a way to make sure the vehicle is roadworthy. Things to consider are:

Tyres: Ensure tyre pressures are suitable for the load and check the condition of tyres, including the spare. Look out for cuts or wear across the whole tyre including sidewall.

Engine oil: Check oil levels regularly and top up if needed. Take your car back to the garage if you’re topping up more than usual.

Water: Always keep your screen wash topped up with a good ratio of water and screen wash to maximise the cleaning efficiency so you can clear debris or dirt off your windscreen easily.

Lights: If your indicators, hazard lights, headlights, fog lights, reverse lights or brake lights are not functioning properly, you are putting yourself and your family at risk. In addition, your vehicle may fail its MoT.

Fuel: Before setting out make sure you have enough fuel to get to your destination. Running out of fuel can put you, your family and other road users at risk unnecessarily.

If you experience problems with your vehicle and you can’t leave the motorway you should always try to go left – to an emergency area, a hard shoulder, motorway services or slip road hard shoulder.

But if that is not possible and you have stopped in a live lane or feel your life is in danger you must stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt and hazard lights on and call 999 immediately.

Drivers should also take a few minutes to plan their journeys in advance. Live updates on traffic flow can be found at http://www.trafficengland.com/.

For people travelling to the Kent ports, drivers are also being reminded that Operation Brock is active on the M20.

Operation Brock is a traffic management arrangement for traffic wishing to use Eurotunnel and the Port of Dover.

Drivers crossing the channel should:

  • Plan ahead and check before they travel
  • Leave plenty of extra time
  • Bring some supplies in case of delays (water, food etc)
  • Follow the signs when they get onto the M20

Drivers heading for the Kent ports can check on the status of Operation Brock here: https://nationalhighways.co.uk/travel-updates/travel-alerts/m20-kent-coastbound-operation-brock-carriageway-closed/

Hundreds Set To Attend Community Event At Crawick Multiverse On Sunday

Hundreds set to attend community event at Crawick Multiverse on Sunday

Scotland’s largest rural performing arts festival will take over the site in Sanquhar on Sunday 29th May bringing brand new street band from Oi Musica, The Tubes and partnering with Dumfries & Galloway Dance to showcase the incredible community work they’ve done during their 10 day Festival.

The Tubes

Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival have partnered with Dumfries & Galloway Dance to work with local schools in Sanquhar and get young people involved in their regional DG Dance Dare. They are on a mission to get the whole region dancing with their dance advocates inviting everyone to get involved by learning the regional dance dare, filming it and sharing it. Working with A’ the Airts in Sanquhar, Dumfries & Galloway Dance have taught the dance to local young people who will then be able to join in the performance at the event on Sunday.

As well as engaging with local communities and working with schools, the team at Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival are delighted to welcome Oi Musica’s brand new band The Tubes who will bring a ray of sunshine to Crawick Multiverse with their energetic sounds and upbeat tracks.

With banjo, percussion and harmony singing, shot through with trumpet, trombone and sousaphone for a heady mix of searing brass and earthy groove.

The band boasts 4 ex members of Edinburgh’s internationally acclaimed Orkestra del Sol, sadly now disbanded but whose spirit lives on in the work Oi Musica does to reclaim the streets and public spaces as settings for live music, fun and excitement and they are set to bring a lively and incredible set to Crawick Multiverse at 4pm on Sunday 29th May.

The band exudes positivity – its musicians adept at bringing the Good Times. Tap a toe, whistle a chorus and get into the swing ‘n’ shuffle – Americana, N’Orleans jazz and a dash of home grown folk.

Crawick Multiverse is an incredible land art installation based on cosmology, science and art giving audiences the chance to savour the beautiful landscape.

The show will be held in the Sun Amphitheatre which is at the heart of the site. It captures the beauty of the total eclipse, replicating its iconic shape and form with a circle of boulders and ridges representing the sun.

With hundreds of people set to attend the event, this showcase will celebrate the incredible work that the Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival has undertaken throughout their 10 day event, culminating in a showcase for the region and communities at Crawick Multiverse.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at www.dgartsfestival.org.uk

Local Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold Achiever Meets HRH The Earl of Wessex

Local Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold achiever meets HRH The Earl of Wessex

Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award achiever, Duncan Bolling, from Brydekirk, Dumfries and Galloway, was among a handful of young people from across the UK to be presented to HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex at a celebration event held in Buckingham Palace Garden last week.

During the week a record-breaking 12,000 Gold Award holders were welcomed to Buckingham Palace Garden for the first Duke of Edinburgh’s Award celebrations since the pandemic. Many achieved their Gold while facing unprecedented challenges and restrictions. Duncan had just completed his Gold Award and was due to attend the event in London to formally receive his award back in May 2020. Having waited two years for this celebration Duncan, now studying Acting at Norwich University of the Arts, was delighted to attend: “The postponement of the DofE Award celebration back at the beginning of the pandemic was a huge disappointment. The chance to attend one of the first events, as we recover from these terrible two years, has been even more memorable and special.”

All Gold Award holders to attend Buckingham Place Garden were invited to share their story about what they experienced while working towards their Gold Award, and how it has helped them with the next step into adult life. Duncan submitted his story, saying that as a person with Autism, having experienced great difficultly bonding with other young people, the activities to reach his Gold DofE Award status gave him purpose and helped build his confidence as he learned new skills. His story was picked up by the DofE celebration event organisers and he was invited to be amongst a few Gold Award holders to be present to HRH The Earl of Wessex to discuss what the DofE Award meant to them.

Duncan Bolling
On reflection, following last week’s celebration Duncan said: “It was an honour to meet HRH The Earl of Wessex. DofE was a life changing experience for me, it pushed boundaries I didn’t even know I had. I still get flashbacks, even three years after achieving my Gold. I remember the rain, the snow, the gut retching thought at 4.30 in the afternoon that there’s still another 5 miles to go! But the sense of achievement made it all worth it.
“I’m very grateful for all that I’ve been through and the friendships that I made along the way. DofE, most importantly, gave me purpose throughout my teenage years as I struggled, being autistic, to create bonds and friendships. I was pushed through by this scheme to keep up my activities and keep learning new skills.” Duncan also made special mention to the DofE Leader at his school, Lockerbie Academy: “Miss McNay got me through all three levels and was always there for me when I was at my lowest. I hope that I have made her proud.”
Duncan and his mum, Lynda McDairmant

The DofE celebration event was attended by Duncan and his mum, Lynda McDairmant. Many inspirational speakers were there and Duncan made full use of the event to hear from high achievers such as Levi Roots, of Reggae Reggae Sauce and Dragons Den alongside famous DofE alumni, Chef Matt Tebbutt of Saturday Kitchen fame and actor, Nina Wadia OBE, best know for BBC sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, EastEnders and Still Open All Hours. Nina was happy to give Duncan advice on entering the acting profession, which is his ambition.

Duncan has just completed his first year studying at Norwich University of the Arts, following a difficult time coping with the upheaval of the effects of the pandemic, and the restrictions so many young people struggled with. His mum said: “Out the other side, the experience of the DofE Gold Award event at Buckingham Palace Garden was a true celebration for all who attended, young people and parents alike. It is a very good feeling to see things return to more normal and our young people able to lead the lives they deserve.”

Duncan worked during last summer at Annan Cinema and from that secured a job at City Cinema in Norwich, to supplement his income during studies. He hopes one day to be seen on the cinema screens and also to return to DofE as an ambassador for this scheme, which helped him so much in his personal development

More about the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Celebration at Buckingham Palace and the Award itself

HRH The Earl of Wessex is a Trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, started by his father in 1956.

The Award celebration recognised the outstanding work and determination of the Gold Award holders who attended Buckingham Palace Garden. The largest occasion ever, held over four events last week (Monday 16th and Friday 20th May, morning and afternoon), each event was attended by around 3,000 Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award holders.

The first DofE Award celebration since the pandemic saw Buckingham Palace Garden transformed into a festival-style celebration for young people and their loved ones, with chances to hear from famous DofE Award holders and international adventurers and explorers, pick up career advice from business leaders and entrepreneurs, and join in garden games and activities.

The pandemic hit young people hard, affecting their education, social lives, jobs and mental health. At a time when many lost structure and routine, the DofE provided a much-needed motivation, purpose and focus. Supported by their Leaders, more than 330,000 young people worked towards their DofE Awards during the first year of the pandemic, and volunteered more than 1.8 million hours in their communities, often helping the COVID relief effort.

Ruth Marvel, DofE CEO, said: “Achieving a Gold DofE Award is a remarkable achievement at any time – but over the last two years young people have overcome extraordinary challenges to achieve theirs. I’m delighted we’re finally able to give them the celebration they deserve and recognise the amazing passion, resilience, and creativity they’ve shown.
“Young people were some of the hardest hit by the pandemic, losing out on education and social development, experiencing unprecedented levels of mental ill-health and now a cost of-living crisis – but, as today’s attendees show, they have the potential to achieve amazing things given the chance. We owe it to all young people to give them access to opportunities like the DofE, which can help them build their confidence, resilience and skills so they’re ready for anything.”

A Gold DofE programme is a demanding, non-competitive personal challenge, open to all young people, which takes a minimum of 12 months to complete. Young people build their own programmes with activities in five sections – Physical, Skills, Volunteering, a five-day Residential and a four-day expedition.

Every year, the DofE inspires hundreds of thousands of young people – from all walks of life – to develop skills, resilience and self-belief. We help them take on their own challenges, follow their passions, make a difference to their communities and discover talents they never knew they had. Hundreds of thousands of young people work towards their DofE Award every year.

DofE is open to any young person aged 14-24. Each young person builds their own DofE programme – picking their own activities and choosing which cause to volunteer for – in order to achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold DofE Award. The DofE is run in schools, youth clubs, hospitals, fostering agencies, prisons, sports clubs and more, all over the UK. Find out more at DofE.org

Pro Cyclist Anna Shackley Leads Coaching Session With Dumfries School Children

Yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 25 September) professional cyclist and current under-23 national time-trial champion, Anna Shackley, led a cycling coaching session for children from Loreburn Primary School in Dumfries.

The session took place at The Crichton in Dumfries, which will host the time-trials for this year’s British National Road Championships on Thursday 23 June. That will be followed by the circuit races in Kirkcudbright on Friday 24 June and the road races in Castle Douglas on Sunday 26 June.

Speaking at the session, Anna said:

“I’m very excited to visit The Crichton and see the great course ahead of the British National Time Trials in a few weeks’ time. I’m really looking forward to racing British National Road Championships again and to fight it out with the hopes of retaining my title, particularly in my home nation. With the incredible breadth of British talent out there, I’m sure the race on Scottish soil will be one to remember, for both riders and spectators.”

Cllr Archie Dryburgh, Chair of the Council’s Communities Committee said:

“We’re really looking forward to more world class cycling taking place in our region.  We’ve a strong reputation of hosting cycling events within D&G and these championships will be no different. Involving our local communities in the three events is absolutely key to their success and as such we’re in regular dialogue with residents and businesses to ensure we make a real go of this fantastic opportunity as part of an action packed summer of events in Dumfries & Galloway.”

Cllr John Campbell, Vice Chair of the Communities Committee added:

“This event will bring significant economic benefits to the region.  They’ll be athletes and officials staying in local accommodation, eating in local restaurants and cafés and using local shops. This coupled with locals coming out to cheer on the athletes in the three different events will help add our unique atmospheric stamp on what is already a prestigious event. As a local, I’m very much looking forward to getting out and watching the action unfold.”

About Anna Shackley:

Anna Shackley, 21, is the current under-23 British National Time Trial Champion and currently rides for UCI Women’s WorldTeam SD Worx. Shackley represented Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and is aiming to win the elite time trial title at this year’s British National Road Championships on 23-26 June, and will also be competing in the road race.

Women’s Team Open With League Win Over Corstorphine – Cricket News

Women's team open with league win over Corstorphine - Cricket News
Niamh Muir

At Nunholm, the combined Dumfries CC and Galloway CC women’s team restricted RH Corstorphine to 96 for 8 in their thirty overs in their opening Women’s Premier League fixture.

Instrumental in that pressure was Roshini Prince-Navaratnam on debut who came on first change and spun her way to four wickets. Also on debut Hannah Marshall took three wickets and Niamh Muir neatly took out off stump for her wicket.

Prince-Navaratnam and Muir built on their bowling success with an opening partnership against the Edinburgh side. Muir was out caught attempting to hit over the top for 27 but Prince-Navaratnam completed an impressive Ashleigh Building Player of the Match performance by hitting a winning four to reach 53 not out.

The Sunday XI appreciated their friendly encounter in the Eden Valley League against Carlisle. There they piled on the runs with Mat Williams retiring on 52 plus 21 from Adam Malik. Batting at four Fergus Bainbridge hit his way to a score of 40 and he was then supported by Scott Muir with 33 not out and Sean Thornely 30 not out.

Dumfries’s 212 for 4 in the 36 overs was a challenging target but Carlisle set out on their chase. Junior Billy Morgan took the first wicket followed by a bowled by James Hobman. The required run rate was increasing and Captain Adam Malik came on to bowl late on and was able to successfully remove opener Egglestone for 82 and bowl Smith for 35 after their significant partnership. Malik went on take 5 wickets for 21 for the Nith Valley Player of the Match as Carlisle ended on 179 for 7, for a 33 run Dumfries victory.

Dumfries Cricket Club welcome new players, of any age from 5 upwards, male and female, to come along to the club’s various sessions and can contact the club on [email protected], via www.dumfriescricketclub.com, or on social media @dumfriescricket.

NFU To Host Workshops On Agricultural Vehicle Legislation Alongside The DVSA & Police Scotland

NFU TO HOST WORKSHOPS ON AGRICULTURAL VEHICLE LEGISLATION ALONGSIDE THE DVSA AND POLICE SCOTLAND

Scottish farmers and crofters encouraged to join events in Newbridge, Laurencekirk, and Ayrshire

NFU Scotland will be hosting six half day workshops this summer on agricultural vehicle legislation in conjunction with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Police Scotland.

The workshops will enable farmers and crofters to ensure that their agricultural vehicles are fit for purpose. Family members and employees are also welcome to join.

The events will cover licensing regulations, loaders, forks and other projections, load security, weights, coupling, brakes, lighting and markings, tyres, and general vehicle maintenance and road behaviours.

The workshops will be held on Wednesday 8 June in Newbridge, Tuesday 21 June in Laurencekirk, and Tuesday 5 July in Cumnock. There will be two sessions running each day with the choice of a morning (09.00 – 12.00) or afternoon session (13.00 – 16.00).

NFU Scotland members can find out more and register for these events free of charge at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/FHDHNXS or by calling 0131 472 4000. A charge of £50 + vat will be made to all non-members – payment can be made by calling 0131 472 4000. Any questions regarding the events should be directed to your Regional Manager.

Speaking ahead of the events, NFU Scotland’s Transport Advisor Jamie Smart, said: “Farmers have to share public roads with other users, and it is important that they keep themselves up to date with the legislation. Ignorance is no defence in the eyes of the law. These events, run in conjunction with DVSA and Police Scotland, allow farmers to learn what they can and cannot do from those who enforce the rules. The events are run as practical workshops and will give those who attend a chance to ask questions as well as observe what is expected of them. A few hours spent at one of these events may just save you from fines, points, or even the loss of your licence.”

Dumfries Shop Workers Shave Heads To Raise Over £700 For Charity

DUMFRIES SHOP WORKERS SHAVE HEADS TO RAISE OVER £700 FOR CHARITY

Three colleagues from a store in Dumfries volunteered to shave their heads to raise money for the store’s charity partner, SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health).

The colleagues, Angela Baird , Catherine King  and Rian Mills, all had their heads shaved in-store on Friday 29th April by local hairdresser Kellie Tulloch.

The head shaving event has raised an impressive £768 to date, with intrepid trio all collecting sponsorship from their friends, family and local customers.

Established in 1923, SAMH is Scotland’s national mental health charity. Supporting over 60 communities throughout the country, the charity works with both adults and young people to provide mental health social care support, services in primary care, schools and further education, among others.

Volunteer and Dunelm employee Angela Baird also donated over 30cm of her hair from the shave to The Little Princess Trust, who provide free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Rian Mills, said: “I shaved my head because it’s for a great cause – as someone who suffers with my own mental health, I felt that it was a good idea to do something for a good cause that will support other people who need help. Recently, I’ve been told that I have alopecia and that the missing hair on my head may not grow back, so it was a big step for me. I’d do it again a million times over, if it meant helping raise money for charities in need.”
Dumfries Dunelm Store Champion Abby Conchar, also commented: “We are so pleased to be able to donate, not only to SAMH, but also to The Little Princess Trust too. We can see how much it means to all three colleagues, and the whole team is incredibly proud of them.  In different ways, mental health plays a massive part in all our lives. To be partnered with a charity such as SAMH is an honour and we’ve supported them in many other ways including a book stand in store, raffles, and a ‘Miles For Mind’ cycling event.”

Dumfries & Galloway Citizens Advice Appeals Team To Help Those Who Require Representation At Social Security Appeal Tribunals

Dumfries & Galloway Citizens Advice Appeals Team is here to help those who require representation at Social Security Appeal Tribunals

The Appeals Team is one of many projects within Dumfries and Galloway Citizens Advice Service (D&G CAS) that assists people within Dumfries & Galloway. The Appeals Team helps people who have taken their benefits claims through to the appeals process and who require representation at appeal hearings which are heard by Her Majesty’s Court and Tribunal Service.

In response to the pandemic, the project had to adapt to help people with their appeals over the phone, through email, video conference calls and then face to face once again. This multichannel approach allows us to be more accessible to the people who need our support.

Ramsay Norman, Benefits Specialist, states: “Over the year the appeals team has supported and represented over 300 clients at tribunal and have gained approximately £1,500,000 in lost benefits.
“We would advise all clients who are unhappy with a decision made by the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP), you have the right to request a mandatory reconsideration of the decision and then, if refused again, you have the right to appeal.
“If you need any advice on mandatory reconsiderations or appeals, please contact us for free, impartial and confidential advice and representation.”
