New ‘chapter’ For Dumfries As ‘Big DoG’ Children’s Book Festival Launches

This week the waiting will be over as the BIG DoG childrens book festival comes to Dumfries for the very first time.

The Family friendly festival runs from Friday 7th April until Sunday 9th, there will be more than 25 events to bring magic and delight to pre-school and primary school children from all over Dumfries and Galloway.

Writers will pop up with their favourite characters and stories at the iconic venues around Dumfries including the historic Theatre Royal, the Robert Burns Centre and the Dumfries Observatory.  Grown-ups can go along too, but BIG DoG is making sure that children are centre stage.

What’s happening?

Adventure and excitement is on offer.  Follow Tommy at Captain Firebeard’s School for Pirates where swashbuckling lessons are important; or hear about the hilarious trials and tribulations in The World of Norm who just never seems to get anything right.

There’s fun to be had at all the events for the under fives, with a range of animal friends written about by Debi Gliori, Renita Boyle, Emily Dodd, Vivian French and Susan Rennie who has given that children’s classic ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” a Scots-language makeover, but she says the little ones shouldna’ be feart.

Not just reading stories

Dance, puppets, handcrafts, film and music will all give ‘paws for thought’ as well as a chance to get involved and be hands on.
