Contribute to ‘The Summer of Cycling’: Dumfries Museum Seeks Your First Bicycle Photos for Exhibition

Dumfries Museum is organizing an exhibition in the summer of 2023 to showcase the history of bicycles and their impact on our lives.

This exhibition, part of the Dumfries and Galloway Summer of Cycling, will delve into the themes of freedom, fitness, leisure, and work, highlighting the significant role bicycles have played in these areas.

One of the key exhibits will be the First Bicycle, a groundbreaking invention created by Kirkpatrick MacMillan in 1839. The museum is delighted to have an example of this historic bicycle on display, which will be a focal point of the exhibition.

In order to enhance the exhibition and create a deeper connection with visitors, Dumfries Museum is inviting contributions of photographs featuring individuals with their first bicycles. These photographs will be prominently showcased alongside the First Bicycle exhibit, allowing visitors to relate to and appreciate the personal experiences and memories associated with their own first cycling adventures.

The museum recognizes the sentimental value attached to the first bicycle and understands that many people have photographs capturing these cherished moments.

If you would like to participate in this initiative, you have the option to either email your photograph to [email protected] or contact the museum staff at 01387 253374.

Additionally, you are welcome to take your photograph directly to the museum during its regular opening hours.

It is important to note that while the museum would love to include all submitted photographs, space limitations may prevent the inclusion of every submission.

The deadline for submitting your photograph is the 14th of July 2023.

Following the selection process, the chosen photographs will be displayed at Dumfries Museum throughout the months of July and August, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the diverse stories and memories associated with cycling.
