Garlieston Military Weekend All Set For August 17th & 18th at Galloway House

Garlieston Military Weekend

Excitement is building as organisers begin the countdown to the third annual Garlieston Military Weekend.

With only a handful of tickets left for the Saturday night dance being held in the ballroom of Galloway House, the entertainment for the evening was announced as being the Catstrand Ukulele group who will play wartime favourites and provide a cabaret. The evening also includes period music to dance to and a cold supper based on a Victory cookbook of the period.

The magnificent Galloway House also provides the backdrop for the two-day event which runs over the weekend of 17th and 18th of August from 10am to 4pm each day. Re-enactment societies, classic cars, military vehicles, Kerry’s Kitchen providing high tea on the lawns and a range of stalls are just part of the terrific day out that promises fun for all ages. Hairdresser Vanessa Paterson will be available during the afternoon to help create the right period hairdo, and there’s also the chance to enjoy a range of old-fashioned family games.

At 4pm on the Saturday the military vehicles and classic cars will form a convoy travelling round nearby villages before returning to the war memorial in Garlieston where a short wreath laying service will be held, led by local veterans, to commemorate those who gave their lives in both World Wars and mark 75 years since the D-Day landings, an event in which the village played a key role.

The annual event helps to raise money for military charities including SWS&R, Support Our Paras, Poppy Scotland and Combat Stress.

Chair of the organising committee Steve Hanna said: “We are very grateful to the owner of Galloway House Kamal Hanif for allowing us to use this amazing venue. We’re still looking for volunteers to help us during the weekend and we’re also happy to take bookings from stall holders who would like to take part. Just contact us through our facebook page.”
