South West Scotland Dairy Show success for new exhibitors

South West Scotland Dairy Show attracted a full ringside of spectators to see a great display of 62 dairy cattle from regular and new exhibitors, as well as 22 young handlers, judged by Euan Lawrie, from Grangehall Holsteins, Lanark.

With numbers up and a packed ringside, the show, which is supported by 33 sponsors, was a huge success.

Winning the first class of the night was Sophie Brown in the junior showmanship, leading Meiklefirth Tatoo Erica. While, in a hotly contested senior handling class Katlyn McCormick emerged top of the line.

Champion calf was first time exhibitor Leanne Bertram’s January 2023-born Jersey calf, Clydevalley Lightning Gail 2, led by Georgie Bertram. This is a daughter of Laitjoie Lightning and backed by 6 generations of Very Good or Excellent dams, she was purchased from Robert Hunter as a foundation for Leanne’s own herd.

Standing reserve champion was Jack Baynes leading Marleycote Sea Lily 36, an August 2022-born daughter of the McCornick Nelson son, Changue Meikle Lad. Backed by six generations of Very Good or Excellent dams, she also has two sisters classified Very Good, and is also a sister to Royal Flush Sea King who is sold through Cattle Services (Ayr). She has always been placed in the top two spots throughout the show season and sells as part of a choice at the Borderway Black & White Sale in December.

The Baynes’ trip from Hexham continued to be a successful one when they secured the Ayrshire Championship with Morwick Peggy 111 who is owned in partnership with Stuart Mullan. The 5th lactation cow is classified Excellent 93, having calved in September she is producing almost 60 litres a day. Bred from three generations of Excellent dams, she stood champion Red and White heifer at AgriScot for breeder Michael Howie.

Taking Reserve spot was Halmyre Urr Louise 376 VG87 (2yr) from Keith Davidson. This daughter of the Kamouraska Rockstar son, Halmyre Urr Rockstar, is only five weeks fresh in her second lactation. As a heifer in milk she was Interbreed Heifer Champion at the Royal Highland Show and Reserve Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show.

The Jersey Championship headed West to Wellhouse Colton Emerald from Hew, Wilma and Jack Howie’s Wellhouse Jerseys. Having calved in March, she is still giving 21 litres at 6.17%bf and 3.73%p and scored EX91, making her the fourth generation of excellent cows. Her first show was in July at Stranraer Show where she was Jersey Champion and Reserve Interbreed.

Donna Patterson led Cormick Call Me Minnie Moo to stand Reserve Champion. This heifer in milk, owned with her father Davie McCormick is sired by Audibel Jordan. Fresh on the 21st July, she stood first at Moffat.

First time exhibitors T & M Irving from Canonbie took the Holstein Championship honours with their third calved daughter of Sandy-Valley Scenario. Fresh in July and averaging 3.7 milkings a day through the robot she is currently giving 60 litres. In her second lactation she gave 11,600 litres at 4.14%bf and 3.21%p.

Standing Reserve Champion was Logan Rubels Seisme VG88, the winner of the junior cow class from Brian and Michael Yates. Fresh with her second in July, giving 50 litres a day. She stood first and reserve champion at Dumfries Show and Reserve Red & White Champion at UK Dairy Day 2023, and was unbeaten in her class as a two year old in 2022.

Commenting on the show, judge Euan Lawrie said: “South West Scotland Dairy Show is a very well organised and run show, the entry numbers and quality of entries was fantastic. The enthusiasm and quality of the youngster was great to see and bodes well for the future. My championship line-up shows what I like, well balanced, correct animals with strength and dairyness, quality udders and great legs and mobility.”
