BABY SHARKS CAN BE DEADLY

The Junior Solway Sharks were thrilled to be asked onto the ice with the Senior team for their first game of the season against Billingham last weekend.

The junior players formed a guard of honour to lead the senior team onto the ice, and lined up with them for the anthem before the game.

Chair of the Junior Club Graeme Houston told DGWGO Sports News, “The players were delighted when the Sharks asked them 1 a 1 a shark juniorsalong to the game, and very excited. It is great for the kids to be on the ice with players who a few years ago were at the same stage as they are now, have worked hard and now play at the highest level. There can be few things that make you as proud as playing for your local team on your local ice at the highest level, and it shows our player pathway in action. We would like to thank the Sharks very much for having us.”

1 a 1 a sharks 10s x ice 1On Sunday the youngest Junior Sharks, the under 10s, hosted a cross-ice tournament at the ice bowl. Teams from Kirkcaldy, Kilmarnock and North Ayr came along and joined in the fun, which saw each team play 6 games during the morning. Everyone left tired but happy, having enjoyed the competition.

Solway coach Joe Coulter told DGWGO, “It’s just a pleasure to watch these kids play ice hockey, they are so young but there is such a depth of talent in the team. Several of the coaches from visiting teams made a point of complimenting the young squad on their skill and teamwork. These mini-tournaments give a great indication of how successful the development of ice hockey is in Dumfries right now, and hopefully these young players will be the stars of our teams in the future.”
