Galloway Ladies Third Place Success in Dollar

On Sunday 13th March the Galloway ladies cricket team had an early start in order to compete in a ladies indoor cricket tournament.

The competition took place at Dollar Academy, Clackmannanshire and was organised by Cricket Scotland’s Kari Carswell. The Galloway team consisted of six eager players, a mixture of ladies and youths including Natalie Hamblin, Louise Cumbley, Laura Scobie, Alex Livingston and Julie McCulloch and Captained by Jessica McCulloch.

Along with the Galloway Ladies were two teams that had travelled down from Elgin, two teams from Edinburgh University and a team from Stirling. All teams had determined and able players. The standard of play from the Galloway ladies has been improving consistently over the indoor season, because of this the team are a force to be reasoned with. With six teams playing the tournament was a busy one, each team played one another, with five overs each way.

The Galloway girls faced MCA Storm for their first match. This team were fiery with tight fielding and strong batting resulting in a loss for Galloway. However this was a wake up call for Galloway as to the standard of the competition and from then on the team upped their game. This was the only match they were to lose, the team drew on one match and won three. The quality of play from the Galloway team was outstanding. Winning teams were awarded five points for a win, tied matches were awarded two.

In the thrilling count up to determine which teams were in the play off for first and second place it was calculated that MES Storm were in the lead with 25 points. Tied in second were both Galloway and Edinburgh Uni Reds. Ruling stated that in event of a tie at the end of the group games the number of wickets would determine league placings.

Sadly for Galloway they missed out on being in the final by one wicket. This meant that the Galloway girls played Stirling County in the third/ fourth playoff match. This turned out to be an exciting and evenly matched game with the Galloway team’s excellent run taking, bowling and fielding resulting in a win. This was an excellent day for the Galloway Ladies and they are looking forward to the final indoor tournament next month in Edinburgh before the start of the outdoor season commences!
