Being homeless, or at risk of being homeless, is a challenge that shouldn’t be faced alone. Quarriers Dumfries and Galloway Youth Housing Support Service has been running for six months, and to highlight the advice and practical help available, it is hosting two open days and inviting anyone who needs information to come along to link into the support available.
Alongside the Quarriers service, which supports those aged between 16-25, there will be helpful representatives from Social Landlords, Let’s Get Employed, Apex, mental health services, LGBT, LGBTY, Shax and many others will be present to help link those at risk into the available support they need. Both locations have facilities for confidential conversations with people who are there to provide support through challenging times.
The open days start at 11am and will kick off with introductions to the service, then Let’s Get Employed will talk about what they can offer and following that there will be a chance to chat with the other services that are present to talk through the young person’s needs.
Julia Cringean, Project Manager of the Quarriers service said: “We have only been open for six months and we have already had more than 200 referrals. The young people we receive referrals for are often faced with these circumstances through no fault of their own and we can see that there are so many barriers, so we want to take the fear out of dealing with our service and others, it helps everyone see the friendly faces behind the agency names.
“We will have our transition mentors on hand to talk about how we can help. Whether that is talking to landlords, offering advice on budgeting so that they can pay their rent, we can teach how to run a household, help organise food parcels and we can signpost on to mental health services if that is required. We are the helping hand that these young people need to stay in their tenancies or get into their own tenancy. We want everyone to know that they are never on their own.”
The D&G Youth Housing Support Service is working with around 75 people at any one time, helping work toward independence by offering both a community and a helping hand they can lean on.
The open days will be held on November 1st at Loreburn Hall, Dumfries, and then on November 10th at the Millennium Centre, Stranraer, from 11am – 3pm.
