Just Nine Months After Cancer, Suzy Rook Swims 1 Kilometre (1000m) in Arctic Waters at the Northernmost Edge of the World, Raising More Than £13,000 for Charity.
Dumfries and Galloway fundraiser and endurance athlete Suzy Rook has successfully completed an extraordinary 1-kilometre swim in the icy Arctic waters of Longyearbyen, Svalbard, becoming one of the first Scottish women and among a small number of British people to achieve the feat in one of the world’s most extreme environments.
On 8 June 2026, just one day before her 38th birthday, Suzy entered Arctic waters measuring approximately 1°C wearing only a standard swimsuit, goggles and swim cap. Battling freezing temperatures and the physical demands of open-water swimming at one of the northernmost inhabited locations on Earth, she completed the 1,000-metre challenge after months of dedicated preparation.
In just January of this year, Suzy could only swim breast stroke. She got to the training in the pool and started her first session , completing just 20 metres in a 35 degree pool. Gruelling training and cold water exposure ensued at a fast pace.
Working fulltime, while being a mummy , wife and playing club rugby. What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that it came just nine months after Suzy’s cancer journey, transforming the swim into a powerful symbol of resilience, recovery and determination.
The challenge was never solely about endurance. For Suzy, it represented an opportunity to prove that life can continue to hold purpose, adventure and achievement following illness and personal adversity. Alongside the physical challenge, she has raised an incredible £13,000 for cancer (Butterfly cancer trust) and mental health charity (back onside)helping support individuals and families facing some of life’s most difficult moments.
“This swim was about so much more than cold water,” said Suzy. “Nine months ago I was facing cancer. Since then, I’ve experienced challenges, loss, fear and uncertainty. Standing on the shore in the Arctic, I knew this wasn’t just a swim—it was proof of how far I’ve come and a reminder that difficult times don’t have to define the rest of your life.”
The challenge required months of preparation, including daily cold-water immersion, ice baths and endurance training to prepare both body and mind for the hostile Arctic conditions. Supporters from across Scotland, the UK and beyond followed Suzy’s journey as she documented the highs and lows of training, helping raise awareness of both cancer recovery and mental health while inspiring others to push beyond perceived limitations.
“This challenge was for everyone who has faced cancer, struggled with their mental health, lost someone they love, or simply found themselves wondering if they could keep going,” Suzy added. “I wanted to show that resilience isn’t about never struggling—it’s about finding a way forward despite the struggle.”
Family, friends, sponsors and supporters have played a crucial role in the success of the fundraising campaign, helping Suzy surpass expectations and raise more than £13,000 for causes close to her heart. Completing the Arctic swim on the eve of her 38th birthday marks not only a remarkable sporting achievement but a celebration of survival, strength and the power of giving back.
