DGWGO went along to meet up with Anne Borrowdale at one of the sessions.
Anne told DGWGO ‘The sessions are for older people, we’ve said over 50s but expecting people in their 60s, 70s, 80s or what whatever age they are and to come in and have some fun and healthy exercise playing table tennis.”
“We’ve got the hall and lots of tables in there. There’s a kitchen so we can do hot drinks and all sorts of things. Upstairs we’ve got another room that can be used as a social space but mainly it will be people playing table tennis and having a little break for a cup of tea if they want to halfway through.”
“Table tennis is one of those sports that you can play if you’re a complete beginner and it can go through to somebody who wants to play really energetically and competitively. We’re encouraging people who are beginners and people who maybe haven’t played for many years to come back and have a go because as I say it’s really easy to pick up. Also, if you’ve got disabilities you can play in a wheelchair as you can play leaning on the table. Yes, so table tennis is a really healthy sport because you can start doing it and play it at whatever level you want.”
“It’s also really good for the brain because you’re having to think about how you’re hitting the ball and where you’re putting it on the table, and how you’re going to play a shot. The venue is really central. Yes, so we’ve got the free car park at the back in Brooms Road. There are buses that stop nearby and within walking distance, for other people who are in the town centre so it’s really accessible.
