LOCKERBIE SCENES INSPIRE NEW BANNER CREATED BY LOCAL CHILDREN AND ARTISTS

Artists and Students Create Banner Inspired by Scenes of Lockerbie

Pupils use mobile foundry to mint coins inspired by the town

Professional artists and students from Lockerbie Academy are soon to unveil a six metre high banner inspired by the town’s buildings.
Hung from the bottom will be around 50 coins also designed by pupils and minted using a special bicycle-powered foundry.
On Monday, 23rd February the artwork will be put on display in the school’s main entrance space.
The project was a joint initiative by Dumfries and Galloway’s Education Service and Spring Fling – the organisers of Scotland’s premier art and craft open studios event – as a way to give young people first-hand experience of a wide range of art and design techniques. It is funded by the Holywood Trust.
Leah Black, Spring Fling Director, said: “This has been a great project which the artists and the students really enjoyed and which has created a superb new piece of public art which will look fabulous in the school.
“It’s great that so many young people have had the chance to learn directly from practicing professional artists, and to get to talk to them about their work.
“There were some really talented young people involved and may this experience will inspire them to pursue careers of their own in the art, craft or design.”
Morag Macpherson, a renowned international textile designer based in Kirkcudbright, led the team of artists.
Morag herself took the lead on designing the banner and Katie Anderson on the coins, while former academy pupil Kirsty Turpie introduced students to the ancient art of paper collage.
The exact design of the banner and the coins, as well as the collages, are being kept under wraps until the unveiling.
