117 MPH MOTORCYCLIST CAUGHT ON A75

Police Scotland’s Operation Zenith, which focuses on improving and promoting responsible motorcycling across the roads of Scotland in an effort to reduce the number of casualties resulting from road collisions held a planned weekend of action between Saturday 30 April and Monday 2 May 2016.

Inspector Neil Hewitson of the Roads Policing Unit in Dumfries and Galloway said “seasonal leisure motorcycling continues to maintain its growth in popularity nationwide, with rural roads across Scotland a popular choice with riders from all over the UK.  Here in Dumfries and Galloway we have a umber of popular roads which are used by motorcyclists, particularly at weekends between April and September.  Many of these riders use out roads as an opportunity hone their riding skills, and sadly some show a disregard for the speed limits and the safety of themselves and other road users.

Our weekend of action targeted the A75, A708, A713 roads which we know are popular with motorcyclists and over the weekend we carried out road checks in order to raise the awareness with riders of the risks associated with riding a motorcycle and to enforce core road traffic offences which contribute to collision casualties.  Overall those we spoke to were supportive of our actions, although a number were reported for road traffic offences.  This included one 35 year old male rider who is being reported for driving at 117 mph on the A75 road near Annan with two defective tyres on his motorcycle.”

Weekends of action will continue throughout the duration of Operation Zenith.
