93 Year Old Has Large Amount of Money Stolen While Shopping in Dumfries

Police officers in Dumfries are currently investigating the theft of a large amount of money from a 93-year-old woman who was shopping in Dumfries town centre on Saturday 18 November 2017.

The woman, who was in a wheelchair, was accompanied by another lady and both were shopping in the town centre when the theft occurred. Around 11.30 hours the lady had withdrawn the cash from a town centre bank and officers are exploring the possibility that she was followed by a group of three people from the bank to the point where the theft occurred.

Constable Alistair Hope in Dumfries said “we have studied CCTV images across the town centre and in shop premises and we now want to trace the following described three people in connection with this despicable crime. The group consists of one male and two females.

The male is described as being 35/40 years old, with close-cropped hair, a moustache and was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans which had rips on the front. The first female is described as being in her 30s, about 5’5” tall, blonde short hair swept to the side and was wearing a 3/4 length puffa style jacket. The second female is again in her 30s, and was wearing a 3/4 length olive green puffa style jacket and a dark hat.

Anyone who may have been in or around Dumfries town centre on Saturday is asked to give us a call if they might be able to help us identify these three people, or if have seen anything suspicious on Saturday morning, early Saturday afternoon. Callers can contact us at Dumfries on the 101 number.

“I would also like to remind the public to be extra cautious, especially at this time of year when they might be carrying more money than usual.

Be alert to anyone getting too close to you, or who seem to be taking a particular interest in those using local banks, building societies or cash machines.

If you have to carry a large amount of money then split it between different pockets and bags.

We still have a number of purse bells available which when attached to a purse can raise the alarm should someone try to steal it, and these can be obtained at Loreburn Street Police Office.
