Council Welcome Road Improvement Grant for Stephen’s Croft, Lockerbie

At the meeting of the Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee on 12th January 2016 Members will be asked to note funding for various roads and travel links across our region.
Members will be asked to note that the Forestry Commission Scotland Strategic Timber Transport Scheme has awarded 50% grant funding (£53k) in order to carry out remedial work to the road between Lockerbie and Stephen’s Croft. In addition to the Council’s match funding of a further £53k this will bring the total investment to £106k.
Work will now be carried out along the north bound lane of the B7076, from the A709 slip road towards the B7068 roundabout. This will remove wheel track rutting which has been causing a safety issue, especially in wet conditions.
Chair of the Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Colin Smyth said: “I am very pleased with the news that we have been awarded this much needed grant by Forestry Commission Scotland Strategic Timber Transport Scheme. The forestry industry makes a major contribution to the economy of South Scotland, creating and maintaining many jobs. Sustainable timber transport is obviously a key issue for the area, with a high number of rural roads being used by the large haulage vehicles required to move wood from forests. This grant will help us make vital repairs to the road surface along this busy route which is essential to both the local economy and the community and will ensure a safer journey for all road users.”
