Digital approach to pre-op assessments expanded into children’s health

A MODERN and convenient approach to carrying out pre-operative patient assessments is now being expanded into children’s health.

My Pre-Op is a national tool already employed for adults which allows people to complete necessary documentation electronically ahead of an operation.

Senior Charge Nurse Sally Walton said: “My Pre-Op has already been introduced very successfully for adults, and I’m pleased that My Pre-Op Kids is now also becoming available within Dumfries and Galloway.
“Ahead of an operation, people typically need to complete documentation and answer some questions. This can be done on paper, in the form of a face-to-face meeting.
“However, as with so many aspects of life, electronic means of communicating can for many people be a much faster, more convenient and helpful option.
“My Pre-Op Kids introduces this electronic approach to young people and their families.”

Anyone who is about to have an operation will now be contacted by Ultramed to undertake a pre-operative assessment. The contact will be either through SMS text message or by email.

Ultramed operates a secure data system, and provides assistance to anyone who experiences any difficulty in completing their documentation.

One mother from Dumfries and Galloway who used My Pre-Op Kids ahead of their child’s operation said: “It was very easy to log on to and self-explanatory to fill out.
“There were lots of relevant questions, and you can add as much information as you feel necessary to say or add.
“It saves the time of having an appointment to come to hospital to fill it out, and you can do it from the comfort of your own home at a time convenient for you.”

Anyone whose child requires an operation and a pre-operative assessment will be advised that this will come to them via Ultramed, and they can help with any questions.

Sally said: “Having seen the benefits that My Pre-Op has brought to our adult population, and I’m really pleased that we’re now able to offer those to young people and their families through My Pre-Op Kids.”
