DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY MSP SUPPORTS PRIMARY SCHOOLS CALL TO BAN SMOKING IN CARS CARRYING CHILDREN

Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray was invited to Heathhall Primary School on Friday (7th November) to speak with Primary 7 pupils about smoking in cars carrying children.

The Primary 7 class began researching the controversial topic following debates in the Welsh Parliament to introduce a smoking ban in cars in which there are passengers under the age of 18. The pupils then wrote to their local MSP, highlighting the health implications of passive smoking and stating that they had cast a class vote in which 100% of them would support a smoking ban in cars carrying children.

Dr Murray discussed with the pupils the procedures which would take place if a ban were to be introduced, and agreed to support the Bill when it is raised in the Scottish Parliament.

Speaking after the event, Elaine Murray MSP said:

“The pupils are a credit to Heathhall Primary School. For them to be so passionate about such an important issue is fantastic and their concern of the health implications of passive smoking, and smoking in general, really highlights the importance of this topic.

“I look forward to supporting the ban when the Bill reaches Parliament and I thank the pupils for the opportunity to come and discuss such an important issue with them.”
