Holiday Hunger Programme Kicks Off Next Week

Dumfries and Galloway Council along with several third sector partners are delivering a wide range of activities and events which are free to everyone to attend throughout our Mid Term Holidays this year.

The holidays run from Monday 17 February to Friday 21 February and in every Ward of our region young people from Primary 1 to S6 can access free food as part of our Holiday Food Programme.

This programme of events and activities which begins on Monday offer arts and crafts, play sessions, sports and leisure activities, games and interactive sessions and are available for everyone to come along to including parents and carers. The range of projects and events are aimed at all school pupils so there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

This range of fun events and projects have been specifically designed with the children and young people which it will support in mind to ensure that there are sessions which they will all enjoy taking part in throughout the holiday period. There is also an increased range of events in each area this year so that everyone can choose where they want to go to have a day filled with fun and the opportunity to meet their friends and to enjoy their holidays.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of Communities Committee, stated;
“Our Holiday Food Programme for the Mid Term Holidays this year covers all of our region and has been specially designed to offer as much enjoyment to the children and young people taking part as possible. We are especially happy to work in partnership with all of our third sector partners this year who will be delivering their projects from the heart of their communities. This support is crucial during each holiday period which can be so challenging for families who may already be struggling to cope financially.”
Councillor John Martin, Vice Chair of Communities Committee, commented;
Our Council is incredibly committed to supporting all of our children and young people and the continuation of our Holiday Food Programme delivers our pledge to support our families not just during the 38 weeks of Term Time but also during the 14 weeks of holidays which happen throughout the year.”
Jeanette Byers, Chair of the Tackling Poverty Reference Group said;
This can be a hard time for families with parents trying to juggle work commitments with children at home during the holidays which is stressful enough so we want to make all of our children and young people’s holiday time as enjoyable as possible without undue pressure being put on families at this time.”
