HUNDREDS of young people — and those not so youthful — improved their knowledge of the countryside and traditional pursuits at a special event at Hoddom Castle, near Ecclefechan, Dumfries and Galloway, on Saturday.
The third annual ‘Pass It On’ taster day to be held amidst scenic Mid Annandale landscapes next to the River Annan has been hailed a success.
There were a variety of stands, information desks and activity zones with would-be anglers being given practical fly fishing instruction and experience in the river, a short distance upstream from Hoddom Bridge.
Other practical experience was on offer for target rifle shooting, archery, fly tying and bee-keeping whilst first-hand information was available from stands hosted by organisations such as Annandale Red Squirrels, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), Dumfries Gliding Club and ferreting enthusiasts.
There was also security advice, information and rural crime updates at the Police Scotland display area whilst the Nith Inshore Rescue team from Glencaple brought one of their boats and highlighted the advanced technology they use during call-outs.
Organiser Ken McKillop, supported by his wife Angela, were delighted with the turnout and expressed their thanks to Hoddom and Kinmount Estates for the use of the site.
Amongst guests at the event were Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell and constituency MSP Oliver Mundell, who, as well as meeting constituents, tried out several of the country pursuits featured.
David Mundell said: “The Pass It On concept is an excellent one and I’m pleased that Ken and his team are helping pass on this knowledge and practical experience to new generations.”
Meanwhile, Oliver Mundell added: “There have been many challenges and changes in the countryside in recent years, but it is important old crafts and skills are preserved and not lost in the mist of time.”
