The BMX talent, who has competed at European level and is expected to secure global stardom, was an honorary guest at Glenluce Skatepark last weekend (Saturday 24 October) officially opening the new facility in the town.

Originally from Stranraer Kriss began bmxing in the local skatepark and is now ‘grinding it’ with some of the best riders in the world.

Glenluce Skatepark opened following three years of project work which involved the whole community, local council and Dumfries & Galloway Council. Funding was awarded from SportScotland and the Holywood Trust and the community council. The children’s own fund raising initiatives saw the majority of the primary school test out the tarmac during a ‘sponsored scoot’ on the new section of the A75 before it opened.

Committee members from Kirkcudbright Skatepark were introduced to key contacts on the day including representatives from Dumfries & Galloway Council, Skateboard Scotland, Concreate the Holywood Trust and biking celebrity Kriss Kyle.

Kriss Kyle said;

“I’d like to wish Kirkcudbright good luck in their bid for a skatepark and I’d love to get involved. It’s beneficial for kids, gets them out and about and lots of things can happen. Look at me! It can even be life-changing!”

Caroline Heron of Glenluce Youth Club said;

“Glenluce Skatepark is already well used and it was an absolute coup to have Kriss Kyle at the grand opening last weekend.

Members of the community have commented on how well used the skatepark is and what a great facility it is providing young people here with a space to call their own. Our young people appreciate the skatepark because they started the process and have been involved throughout, so they know the hard work that went into it.

1 a 1 a skate 4The proposal for a skatepark facility in Kirkcudbright is fantastic news and, just like Glenluce, the young people there are showing that they are willing to work to improve their lives and the community are showing that they will support then in their efforts. Well done everyone in Kirkcudbright so far!”

Kirkcudbright Skatepark Committee would like to hear all the views of the community and currently have an online survey available which asks ten, short questions. The survey can be found on www.surveymonkey.com/r/X6MY2QW
