MAJOR SEARCH LAUNCHED FOR MISSING HILL WALKER ON CRIFFEL

Last night 6 May 2016 at 7.00pm Moffat MRT received a call from Police Scotland to ask for assistance to locate a missing hillwalker on Criffel near Dumfries.

The missing walker had phoned the police after become separated from his walking partner on the hill.

Moffat MRT commenced the search from Sweetheart Abbey in New Abbey with 10 personnel two landrovers and a control vehicle. A search dog from the Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) Southern Scotland was also called and was en route to the search.

The team was also assisted by the Police Scotland helicopter.

Unfortunately the team only had limited contact via mobile phone with the walker and could not narrow down the search area. The team searched likely escape routes across the hill as darkness was falling. The team was assisted by the Police Helicopter covering larger areas from the air.

At around 2200 the missing walker managed to make his way off the hill safely and knocked on the door of a nearby house in Kirkbean.

Charity Challenge

Every year Moffat Mountain Rescue Team holds its annual charity walk in the hills around the team’s area of operation. There are 4 walks of varying difficulty to meet the needs of all comers. This years challenge is being held in the Durisdeer Hills on the 12 June.
