Oliver Mundell Visit’s PoppyScotland’s Factory

Dumfriesshire MSP Oliver Mundell visited Poppyscotland’s factory in recognition of Remembrance Day and the sacrifice and dedication of Scotland’s veterans.

Poppyscotland, best known for the Scottish Poppy Appeal, provides a variety of support services to the nation’s veterans. These initiatives range from assistance with employment and housing to mental health treatment and tailored financial support.

This organisation partners with the Royal British Legion and other groups throughout the UK in order to help servicemen and women in need. According to Poppyscotland, from October 2014 to September 2015 over 1,429 individuals were assisted through welfare service programs. In addition, Poppyscotland also granted over £1,020,00 during this time period to other organisations that provide veterans with specialized services.

For over 90 years, the trademark handmade poppies, wreaths and other items from the Scottish Poppy Appeal have been used as a fundraising effort to support Scotland’s Armed Forces community.

Mr Mundell toured Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory in Edinburgh and learned first-hand the poppy making process from 34 former servicemen. Mr Mundell discussed the issues affecting veterans and how the Scottish Parliament can better represent these individuals. Both the former servicemen and the Dumfriesshire MSP stressed the need for measures improving veterans’ employment opportunities and access to mental health treatment.

Commenting on the visit Oliver Mundell MSP said: “I thoroughly enjoyed touring Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory and interacting with the former servicemen employed there. Reflecting on the challenges facing Scottish veterans with the individuals who constructed the poppy wreath I will be laying in Moffat on Remembrance Day was a remarkable experience.

“Westminster and the Scottish Parliament should work together to better provide for the men and women of our armed forces and prepare them for the transition to civilian life.

“I am grateful for the sacrifice and dedication that our military makes for Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom. Members of our armed forces help to ensure our freedom and protection and deserve our support upon returning from service.

“I commend the work of Poppyscotland, and its partner organisations, in bettering the lives of Scotland’s military community. As MSP, I will be working hard to ensure that the Scottish Parliament continues these efforts to improve the lives of Scotland’s veterans, particularly in the areas of employment and mental health.”
