PENSIONER ATTACKED AND ROBBED ON DUMFRIES STREET IN BROAD DAYLIGHT

Detectives in Dumfries are appealing for witnesses and information after a 78 year-old woman was knocked to the ground and robbed of her handbag on Friday 1 January 2016.

Around 1450 hours, the elderly lady was walking along Balmoral Road, Dumfries when a passing cyclist snatched her handbag, knocking her to the ground, prior to cycling off.

The victim sustained fractures to her arm and received treatment at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

The suspect was dressed in dark clothing and had a hood up. The bike was also dark in colour.

Extensive enquiries are underway and officers are gathering and reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to find out more information on the suspect.

Detective Sergeant Colin McKinstry said:

“Targeting an elderly woman as she walks along the street is a despicable act and it’s imperative we trace the person responsible. We know from our enquiries carried out so far that several people stopped to assist the lady and I am appealing to them and anyone else who was in the vicinity at the time of the incident to contact us. The information you provide could prove vital in helping us trace the person responsible and holding them to account for their cowardly act.”

Anyone with information is asked to call officers at Dumfries Police Office on 101. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
