POLICE PROBE RISE IN LOCAL HOUSE BREAK-INS ACROSS THE REGION

Housebreakings – Dumfries and Galloway

Police Scotland is investigating a spate of housebreakings in Dumfries and Galloway which happened sometime between Friday 27 and Sunday 30 November 2015. Houses in Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas, Thornhill, Dumfries and Ruthwell were broken into, or attempts made to break into them over this period.

Four houses in Kirkcudbright were the subject of break-ins or attempts. Houses in Dunbar Avenue, Boreland Road and two on the outskirts of the town were all targeted and either broken into, or in one case an attempt made to gain entry. A watch, perfume cash and other jewellery appear to have been taken in the raids.

In Castle Douglas a house in Dunmuir Road in the town was broken into sometime overnight Saturday/Sunday. Money and jewellery appear to have been the target again.

In Dumfries, a house in Makbrar Road was entered sometime between Friday 27/Monday 30 November 2015. Property targeted appears to have been jewellery and cash.

In Thornhill an attempt was made to break into a house in Queensberry Beeches in the town overnight Friday/Saturday. Entry was gaind to the premises however, no property was stolen.

A house at Midlocharwoods at Ruthwell suffered an attempted break-in sometime overnight Saturday/Sunday. Again no entry was gained however damage was cause in the attempt.

Detective Inspector Dean Little at Dumfries said ” we are at this stage appealing for anyone in these towns or indeed anywhere else in the region to get in touch with us if they saw or heard anything suspicious between Friday evening and the early hours of Sunday morning. We are following reports of two sightings of a group of three men who appeared to be acting suspiciously in Thornhill and Castle Douglas in both the early hours of Saturday morning and later that same evening. The men were seen in the Queensberry Beeches area of Thornhill at around 0100 hours on Saturday morning and again at 2040 hours on Saturday evening in Dunmuir Road in Castle Douglas. They are described as (1) Male, white, 18/23 years of age, 5’9″ tall, slim to medium build, dark hair wearing light coloured jeans and a blue waist length puffa style jacket. (2) Male, white, 18/23 years, dark hair, slim to medium build, wearing a dark puffa jacket and jeans. (3) male, white, 5’10” tall, light coloured hair. square face wearing a green coloured waist length jacket and jeans.

A worrying factor in this recent spate of crimes is that a number of the houses which are attacked had occupants in them sleeping at the time as opposed to some which were vacant.

Clearly we are following the line that these crimes are connected given the striking similarities of the crimes which were committed over a very short timescale and are currently following a number of positive lines of enquiry. We still want to hear from anyone who can help us identify these three men and we can be contacted through the usual 101 number.

We would also make the appeal for everyone to be extra vigilant at this time of year as we head into the busy festive period. Households tend to be full with presents at this time and thieves know this only too well. Always close and lock all doors and windows when leaving the house, or overnight and leave a light on when out during the hours of darkness. Anyone who requires advice on home security should contact their local Crime Reduction Officer through 101 and an appointment can be made to call and review your home security. This is a free service which can give practical and affordable advice on how better to make sure you don’t become another statistic in relation to being broken into, and suffer all the heartache that goes with such a crime.”
