‘Fiddler on The Roof’ Comes to Theatre Royal Dumfries

Dumfries Musical Theatre Company’s (DMTC) spring show is “Fiddler on the Roof”, running from Saturday 23rd – Saturday 30th April, with a matinee performance only on Sunday 24th.  It will be a welcome return to the newly refurbished Theatre Royal, Dumfries after an absence of three years.

Rehearsals began in January and this ambitious production has required a great deal of hard work, enthusiasm and commitment from the whole company.

“Fiddler on the Roof” tells the story of hapless Tevye , his long suffering wife Golde and their attempts to make perfect matches for their five daughters. Set in the poor Russian/Jewish village of Anatevka in the early 20th Century, undercurrents of persecution and extreme poverty run throughout, but their strong faith, traditions and humour carry them through.

Change is coming however, from within the community and outside too. The daughters are beginning to rebel. They want to go against their parents’ wishes and marry for love and not security. The Russian government wants to displace the villagers of Anatevka, forcing them to flee their homes. It is a turbulent time. With gentle humour, ambitious dance routines and familiar songs such as “Tradition”, “Sunrise, Sunset”, “If I were a Richman”, “To Life” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”, Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of a community being torn apart. Sadly, this musical is as relevant today as it ever was.

Tevye is played by Jack Hudson who has been a member of DMTC for 50 years this year. It is the second time he has played this role, the first being in 1989. His experience and professionalism have been an inspiration to other members new and not so new!  The youngest cast member was 8 years old when rehearsals started and he too is called Jack, Jack Meredith. So this large cast of 50 really does span the ages covering nearly 8 decades!  It’s a great collaboration of old and new members of all ages and experiences, this show promises to be full of drama, humour, wonderful songs and lively dances.
