CALLING ALL YOUNG MUSICIANS IN DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

The Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership (DAVAWP) has launched its 5th Song Writing Competition for Young People.
The Competition has been running since 2010 and its aim is to raise community awareness of the impact of the various forms of gender based violence – sex trafficking, prostitution, sexual harassment, stalking, domestic abuse, rape/sexual assault, forced marriage, female genital mutilation, honour crimes – and to give local young people the opportunity to express their ideas around these issues in a creative way.
Prizes for the winners include:
• First Prize: £400 + A recording session at Oasis Centre (Dumfries) and the opportunity for the first prize winner to play their winning song to a massive audience at Youth Beatz 2016
• Second Prize: £200
• Third Prize: £100
• An extra £50 prize for the most innovative song content linking forms of violence
The closing date for entries is Thursday 29 October 2015 at 5pm
For rules, an entry form, and more information about previous competitions, people can go to: www.dumgal.gov.uk/davawp/ or Email: [email protected]
All songwriters and/or band members taking part in this Competition must be under 25 years old on or before 31/12/15; including any band members and any musicians involved in the recording of the entry.
Prof. Hazel Borland – DAVAWP Chair – said: “We are delighted to launch our 5th Song Writing Competition for young people. The Competition has been very successful for the last four years; local young people have produced great and powerful songs with very thorough lyrics which helped raise local awareness of the various issues around gender based violence and last year more than 1,500 local residents participated in a popular vote to help select the winners. This is another great opportunity to continue raising awareness of these issues which have a devastating impact on the victims. I am looking forward to listening to this year’s entries, to the popular vote, and to our Anti-violence Concert on 10 December.”
