Nazi Zombies Spotted Near Kirkcudbright

Scotland’s most successful horror franchise “Outpost”, recently enjoyed the world premier of it’s third instalment (filmed at Dundrennan MOD Range near Kirkcudbright and starring Dumfries lad Leo Horsefield) at this years prestigious Edinburgh International Film Festival. In “Outpost 3: Rise of the Spetsnaz” we discover the horrifying origins of these supernatural Nazi soldiers and see them in ferocious gladiatorial battle against the most ruthless and notorious of all military special forces: the Russian Spetsnaz.

Local photographer Kevin Sloan from KSS Images was invited to attend the world famous film festival by friend, actor and cast member Leo Horsfield.

Kevin mingled with some of the film’s stars: Bryan Larkin (“Battleground”), Iván Kamarás (“A Good Day to Die Hard”, “World War Z”, “Hell Boy 2”), Vivien Taylor & Leo Horsfield (“A Spanking in Paradise”), Gareth Morrison (“Outpost 2: Black Sun”)

1000 Faces Scotland

Roger Lever a photographer from Dalbeattie and Drew Johnstone a local film maker are embarking on an ambitious project called 1000 Faces Scotland and are currently carrying out a pilot project in Dumfries and Galloway.

The aim of the project is to present 1000 portraits of people of all ages, and from all backgrounds, occupations, and social classes in Scotland in 2014. The portraits will be added to a web gallery and will be exhibited in a variety of locations throughout the country. Each portrait will have a short biography of its subject attached, helping the project to document the lives of 1000 Scottish people in a momentous year for the country.

Kenny-650

Drew films Roger as he takes many of the photographs and records short interviews with his subjects which will also document their personalities and their speech habits. As speech patterns, accents, and vocabularies are changing rapidly in Scotland at the moment this will be a valuable record for future generations. Drew and Roger will also be filming some of the subjects at work or involved in Voluntary bodies such as Mountain Rescue, Lifeboat and Coastguard organisations. These will be presented as Video Episodes on the website.

The project website will include weekly video blogs and galleries where the public can view the latest additions to the project. This will be free to the audience and accessible from around the world.

Once all the material has been gathered the aim is to produce a short film to be made available online via YouTube and/or Vimeo and investigate the possibility of publishing a book.

Ramsay-650

Musical backing for the video material will be provided by Christopher Lever  Writer John Burns and actor Tommy Thomson are also involved in the project.

All in all a formidable combination to produce what should be a fascinating project.

You don’t have to be born in a place to feel it’s home. You don’t even have to live there. I’m an Aberdonian and fiercely proud of my teuchter roots. I still support the Dons for heaven’s sake and that ain’t an easy job. Yet I don’t feel my roots are in the Granite City. It doesn’t hold my heart.

The south of Scotland was unknown territory to me until I came to work at Border TV. The closest I’d ever been was Ayr, where Butlins was my childhood paradise. So when I first started discovering this lovely land – usually with my nose pressed up against the window of a Border TV crewvan – it was like a revelation. How could I possibly have been so unaware of it?

Snag was, I never seemed to have enough time to really get to know places. The camera crew and I would arrive somewhere, drink several cups of coffee, rearrange the furniture in the interviewee’s house to give us the best light and angles, ask our questions, say thanks very much and then depart post-haste to get the story on that evening’s Lookaround. There was precious little time for lollygagging.

When I was asked to write for Dumfries and Galloway Life (or DGB Life as it was originally), I was chuffed to bits. I’ve always loved to write and as a Journalist I’m far happier with features than hard news, so this was the perfect gig. I’m proud to say I’ve had pieces in every single edition of the magazine, including a series looking at the area’s towns and villages which gave me the perfect opportunity to explore and properly get a feel for places like Kippford and Kirkcudbright, Wigtown and Whithorn, instead of just parachuting in for a brief visit.

I’m no fan of cities – on the odd occasion I’ve had to go to London (note the ‘had to’), my sole desire has been to get the hell out again. I’m just so out of my element there and a million miles away from anything resembling a comfort zone. Give me lonely hills, tumbling rivers and beautiful beaches over teeming streets any time.

So – I suspect I hear you ask – if you love the place so much, why are you not living here? Why do you not have your very own hearth and home in Dumfries and Galloway or the Borders? Actually I do – sort of. I lived in Newcastleton for ten years and if ever a place could be described as my spiritual home – it’s Copshaw. It’s in a beautiful area for one thing – there are loads of horses and great places to ride and the people who live there are friendly, welcoming and warm-hearted. Also – my Mum still lives there so I’ve got bed and board any time I fancy. What’s not to love?

Truth is – it was love that took me away from Copshaw and sent me south of the border. Yes Dear Reader, I married a Cumbrian – and his native roots ran deeper than Ground Elder so there was never any hope of him coming over to my side instead. Cumbria’s a grand place too – I have been and still am happy here, even though the aforementioned husband and I have now gone our separate ways.

Fortunately for me, DGWGO didn’t ask to check my visa when it invited me to come on board. And as it proclaims on every page, it’s for ‘people who love Dumfries and Galloway’. That’s me – so here I am. Hope you’ll live up to your wonderful reputation – and make me feel welcome!

DGWGO Wickerman Competition Winners

In June this year DGWGO ran a competition to win 2 full weekend and camping tickets to the south west of Scotland’s biggest summertime party ‘The Wickerman Festival’ . We kept the competition as an exclusive to anybody that signed up for our monthly newsletter, and we asked the question ‘ Who were the Two Headline Acts for Wickerman 2013’. We had hundreds of entries from all over the world into the competition , and most got the answer correct , which was of course ‘ primal Scream and Amy McDonald’ .

Well I spent hours printing out and cutting out all the entries names, and putting them into my festival hat, I gave it a right good shake, and the first name out was a ‘ Miss Sally Gillies ‘ from Castle Douglas . I contacted Sally and she and her partner Mark were over the moon to win such an amazing prize.

I met up with the winners Sally and Mark this morning at the Wickerman site ( July 6th) to ask them a few questions and get a few pictures of them celebrating. Sally said she was chuffed to bits , as she hadn’t been to the festival for a couple of years, and Mark told me he was really excited as he had never been to the Wickerman festival ever, and he was really looking forward to the whole experience. Especially the burning of the 40ft wickerman on the Saturday night at Midnight !

Sally said the band she was really looking forward to seeing the most was the Friday night headliners ‘Primal Scream’ and their song ‘Country Girl’ is one of her favourites. She also said she was looking forward to finding out more about the brand new Bar in the Starwood and the Ho Down Wendy House as they are both new since the last time she attended the festival!

It was really lovely to meet the winners, and get to know what they were looking forward to the most. DGWGO will be keeping up with Sally and Mark during the weekend of the festival on the 26th and 27th of July to make sure they are ok and making the most of their free passes , kindly donated by the Wickerman team. and we will get more photos of them enjoying the whole experience ! Rain or shine it is going to be amazing and will be the biggest party in the whole of the south west of Scotland this summer.

If you haven’t got your tickets yet, then DGWGO is an official vendor for Skiddle , the ticket supplier for the Wickerman, and you can book your tickets on this link

Is Your Website Mobile Ready?

Why Does Your Small Business Need A Mobile Website?

Today’s business world has never been more competitive. While technology has allowed many businesses to become much more efficient, it has also changed the way consumers buy. Your customers are using mobile devices to shop today!– in fact, Google recently stated that there will be one mobile device for every person on earth by 2015 – that’s less than 12 months away! So what does this mean for you?

As a business owner, you already know how important having an on-line presence is. Your website reflects and represents your company all day, every day. Unfortunately unless your website is optimized for mobile devices, the majority of people using their phones to find local businesses are going to skip over your website entirely.

As your website is right now, it probably looks good (or great) on a regular desktop computer. Now imagine your entire website being compressed and squeezed down to the size of a phone screen. As you have probably seen yourself, viewing a non-optimized site on your phone is simply too much of a hassle.

Users have zoom in and slide around hoping to find the content their looking for to just ultimately decide it isn’t worth their time. Without a mobile site, you’re simply losing out on a lot of business (and a lot of revenue). In a poll amongst those who actively use their phones to search for local products, businesses, and services, 57% of people said they would not recommend a company that had a bad (or non existent) mobile site (source Compuware). Consequently they move on to a different site—your competitor’s—to get the information they need.

But how many smartphone users will actually find you on their phone?

A lot more than you probably think. In fact, 95% of every smartphone user has used their mobile device to search for local products or services within their locality. Out of that number, 60% of users who search for local businesses call the business or visit their location within 24 hours.

So why do you need a mobile website?

The fact is that your customers are mobile right now and they’re using their devices to find businesses just like yours every single day and they expect you to be mobile to. If your website isn’t optimised for mobile devices, there’s a huge chance that they will move on to a site that is.

The Extreme Stunt Show Live in Dumfries

A month ago DGWGO was told about the amazing Extreme Stunt Show Live and that it was coming to Dumfries. We were asked if we would like to help promote it! So being very keen on trucks, bikes and anything that moves at high speed – we jumped at the chance!

The Extreme Stunt Show Live team kindly gave us 10 family passes to give away (enough free tickets for 40 people) and they agreed that we could also offer you exclusive two for one coupons.

So, we got to work on creating a competition for you to all enter and set up the exclusive coupon offer. Well, we have never had a response like it! – we had literally hundreds of entries for the tickets and an amazing 120 coupons were printed off from the DGWGO website!

For those if you that missed it The Extreme Stunt Show Live is a brand new show of endless stunts, currently touring the UK, which has been designed to impress. It is a fast moving combination of freestyle motorcross riders (including FMX competition riders Dave Wiggins and Josh Grinford), BMX riders, stunt buggies, stuntmen routines and of course the 2000 bhp monster trucks (our favourite)

Even though it was slightly wet after a days rain, they still went ahead and gave the crowd a show that was one of the biggest and noisiest things Park Farm Showground has seen for a while!

A large crowd gathered around the arena, wee kids, mums, dads and grandparents – they all seemed to love the live show and it was stunt after stunt. From quads, jeeps on two wheels, to men on fire, motor bikes and beach buggys jumping over cars, motor bikes doing freestyle jumps over 40 to 60 foot wide gaps. BMX Stunt Riders, Motor bikes flying through fire, then of course the 2 massive 2000 bhp monster trucks ripping up the grass, driving over piles of cars, the noise was awesome and the crowd of all ages was loving it !

I was lucky enough to be there to take photos and was accompanied by a friend of DGWGO’s David Slater who filmed the below video.

Also I got to meet and speak with several of our competition winners, all of which really enjoyed the whole experience too! It was great to see such a good turn out of people to support this event, and hopefully it will encourage more large shows to come to D&G for us all to enjoy!

Thank you so much to everyone who took part in the competition.

Galloway Tri Challenge

I drove from Stranraer to Castle Douglas this morning in just over an hour with exertions being limited to gear changes and flicking my ipod to suitably mellow, hangover-friendly tunes.

In a month’s time I will traverse the same two locations but this time by cycling, swimming and running across Galloway. This journey will take around nine hours and will, I have no doubt and despite my mother’s best efforts in raising me better, include any number of expletives and serious consideration of the question “What am I doing??”

So what am I doing? I will leave Stranraer on the morning of the 27th July and cycle to just north of Garlieston. A peloton of friends from Stranraer will keep me company on this 40 miles stretch all raising their own sponsorship. A gentle warm up for what lies ahead!

The next section is by far the most challenging. A 4 mile swim (around 250 lengths of a standard pool) across the tide and current swept Wigtown Bay. The destination is Auchenlarie HolidayPark and I’ll be wanting to stay there for a week by the time I drag myself out the water!

No such luxury awaits though as the running shoes get pulled on and a group of runners (rugby players pretending to be runners) from across the region join me for various legs of the 20 mile run to Castle Douglas again all raising their own sponsorship for what for most will be the longest run of their lives.

I suppose at this stage I should confess to not being an elite endurance athlete, in fact I’m a teacher who plays rugby for Stewartry R.F.C and dabbles in triathlons over the summer to keep me out of trouble. What’s more; around two years ago I couldn’t swim more than four lengths in a pool and had never swam in open water before.

The training and preparation has included multiple circuits of Glenkiln reservoir, the River Dee and a crossing of Loch Ryan, lots of running and I will need to get my bike out of the garage soon…

The more sensible readers will be asking “why?” The answer to that is a combination of the noble and ignoble, of wisdom and folly.

I am raising funds for Cancer Research UK as a result of watching the slow passing of a man I consider myself lucky to have known. A man who in his youth and indeed beyond it was as his son once put it “An Iron-man before there were such things”.

That combined with foolishly discussing an entirely hypothetical route on the rugby bus one day after a few too many bangs on the head and celebratory beers. Before I knew it safety boats were being promised, transport for bikes arranged and it became evident I would have to actually attempt it.

There is a saying, “Always do sober what you said you’ll do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.”

It’s a lesson I’m going to have to learn the hard way.

You can keep up to date with Jamie’s Galloway Tri Challenge on his Facebook Page and also make a donation on his Just Giving page.

Youth Beatz announce daytime appearance of TOWIE star Frankie Essex

Fans of hit TV show TOWIE are in for a treat as Youth Beatz announces a daytime appearance by FRANKIE ESSEX.

Frankie, who plays the sister of Joey Essex in the ITV2 show which regularly attracts over 2 million viewers, will appear on stage mid afternoon before conducting a meet and greet session with members of the audience. She joins the line up alongside headliner Professor Green, Amelia Lily, Finding Albert and a host of local acts at The David Keswick Centre Dumfries on Saturday 10th August.

Thomas Nicoll, a young person from the events team involved in organising the event said; “We have always tried to provide a daytime appearance at Youth Beatz. Getting a member of The Only Way is Essex cast will hopefully encourage people to get there earlier and enjoy some of the other daytime activities on offer”.

Organisers are promising a whole range of daytime activities to entertain the crowd including; Fairground Rides, Segways, Mobile Ski Slope, Laser Quest, Circus Skills, Inflatable assault courses and rodeos, soccerena and climbing wall among others.

The event will also feature the amazing World of Wonka, an immersive and interactive learning journey that meaningfully raises awareness of issues affecting the lives of young people. Other attractions include a high profile daytime guest appearance, activity-based entertainment, family attractions, youth services information, local musicians and community groups.

Now in its fifth year, the award winning event is managed through a partnership led by Community Learning and Development Nithsdale and is part funded by Nithsdale & Stewartry Area Committee. Funding for the event has been secured from Young Start Lottery Fund alongside main sponsors Magnox, Unite, Elections Team Dumfries & Galloway, Domestic Abuse and Violence against Woman Partnership as well as Dumfries and Galloway College and The University of Glasgow, Dumfries Campus.

Chair of Nithsdale Area Committee, Councillor Gill Dykes, said, “Nithsdale Area Committee felt it was important to support this interactive event for young people aged 12-25 years. As well as having fun and enjoying performances from major music artists, they can take part and be better informed about relevant issues, services and opportunities. Youth Beatz has been designed to encourage civic pride and encourage young people to be fully involved in their community. I am delighted at the line up so far and congratulate the staff and young people on all their efforts.”

Youth Beatz 2013 remains free to enter, although tickets will be required and can be obtained from www.youthbeatz.co.uk

Priority will be given to ticket applications from Dumfries and Galloway postcodes and organisers are advising people to get their tickets soon to avoid disappointment as demand has been phenomenal.
