The Wickerman Festival has today (25th April) launched a creative competition to mark their 2014 fancy dress theme and crown a new mini Wickerman who will welcome music lovers at the gatehouse entrance to the festival site.
This year, wicker revellers are encouraged to don their craziest caps, bonnets, hats and toories to celebrate a new fancy dress theme – ‘Wicker Mad Hatters’. Keeping in line with the theme and to mark the installation of a new look gatekeeper Wickerman, organisers are inviting festival fans to get creative by sketching some eye catching headwear to crown the figure. The winning entrant will receive four VIP weekend tickets to this year’s event and will see their hat design be brought to life by a local designer and worn by the wicker figure for the duration of the festival.
The new wicker gatekeeper has been designed and installed by local sculptors Trevor Leat and Alex Rigg of Leatrigg who are the creators of the main Wickerman. They used traditional techniques of entwining and weaving to construct the new sculpture into a welcoming and striking figure, ahead of the Summer festival.

Wickerman Festival Coordinator Helen Chalmers says:

“Five years and few bumps and scrapes later we thought our trusty gatekeeper deserved a bit of a makeover. I’ve no doubt our loyal festival fans will be able to top off the revamp with a unique and Wickerman inspired hat! We’re really looking forward to seeing what they come up with as well as getting a glimpse of some crazy hats across the festival weekend.”

Hat design entries can be posted to Vicki Byers, Burt Greener Communications, 43 Thistle st Lane SW, Edinburgh, EH2 1EW. Or entrants can take a picture of their sketch and email it to [email protected]. The competition opens on 28th April and will close at 6pm on 13th June, all entries will be judged by festival organisers and the winner will be notified by phone and announced via Facebook on 16th June.
