STORE AND BREEDING SHEEP
Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their fortnightly sale of Store and OTM Cattle on Monday 1st February when a packed ringside were in attendance. Also forward on this day were 222 store hoggs and 318 breeding ewes in lamb.
161 Store cattle met with a dearer trade than anticipated selling to buyers from as far afield as Aberdeen to Stafford. Yearling stirks looked easily the biggest trade whilst older cattle were harder to cash. Topping the sale at £1145 were a pen of Aberdeen Angus bullocks from S & L Asberry, Hill of Balmaghie, meanwhile top price per kg was 239.1p per kg paid to W McKenzie, Robb Place for a pen of Simmental crosses. The heifer section topped at £1090 for a pen of Charolais crosses from Hill of Balmaghie and 226.4p for a pen of Limousin crosses from R Jardine & Son, Upper Hardland. Overall average saw the bullocks level at 211.8p per kg and the heifers at 193.5 per kg.
In the sheep ring a feature was the dispersal from Messrs McMorran, Miefield of 277 Scotch Mule Ewes scanned in lamb to a Texel sire and lambing mid-March onwards. Again a large ringside of bidders were in attendance ensuring a fast selling trade ensued throughout. The In lamb ewes topped at £128 and averaged £111.13 overall. A pen of Mule Gimmers in lamb from Upper Dullarg sold to £132 and averaged £131.49 for 41. Store sheep were also easily sold topping at £66 twice for Texels from Upper Ardmannoch and Beltex from Maryfield.
