On Wednesday 10 September, a community light-up event will take place along the River Nith in Dumfries to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.
The event is part of Katy Brown’s year-long fundraising challenge, “Twelve Big Things,” which supports two charities: Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBS) and Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
Katy explained:
“I decided around a year ago that I wanted to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention and specifically for those who have been bereaved by suicide. I lost one of my closest childhood friends to suicide and it’s been in the back of my mind for a few years to do something in his memory. I wanted to do a years long challenge to raise money, so I created the idea of doing 12 big things (one thing each month). The first big thing was lighting up Criffel and after the success of that I’d like to do a two more light ups for the remainder of my challenge.”
Meet at Dock Park Bandstand – 7pm Start
Participants are asked to gather at Dock Park Bandstand at 7pm. From there, the group will walk, run, or cycle towards The Swan before returning along the riverside.
The aim is to “light up” the Nith using head torches or illuminated outfits. At 8pm, people will gather near Devorgilla Bridge for a two-minute silence, during which lights will be switched off before being turned back on. This gesture is intended to show that even when a life is lost, the light they brought to the world continues.

Music Along the River
Local musicians will perform at different points on the route. Performances will include The Samba Sisters and The High Priestess. A final performance will take place at Devorgilla Bridge, followed by the silence and a concluding piece from the Buccleuch and Queensberry Pipe Band.
Those unable to take part in the full walk can join at any stage along the route or attend at Dock Park/White Sands for 8pm.
A Walk Accessible to All
The route is flat, fully pathed, and suitable for wheelchairs, prams, cyclists, and runners. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads. Parking is available at the White Sands and other town centre locations.
Participants should bring their own torches or illuminated clothing. Marshals in high-visibility vests will be present to guide and support along the route.
Supporting Local Suicide Bereavement Charities
SoBS provides peer support for people bereaved by suicide. The Dumfries branch meets on the first Thursday of each month and is currently seeking additional funding to continue its work. Funds raised from the event will support this branch as well as CALM.
The event is free to attend. Donations can be made in cash at collection buckets near musicians, through the barcode on event posters, or online via the Twelve Big Things GiveWheel page.
