Refurbished Ewart Library Opens Its Doors Once Again

The Ewart Library in Dumfries has officially reopened, welcoming visitors back into one of the town’s most recognisable civic buildings. Following a programme of refurbishment works, the much-loved facility is once again providing access to local history resources, reading spaces, digital services and community activity.

Located on Catherine Street, the library’s reopening coincides with the annual George Shirley tribute for Guid Nychburris—an apt moment to mark its return to public life.

The council-led refurbishment has seen a range of internal and external improvements aimed at preserving the character of the historic building while enhancing its usability for modern audiences. Completed works include upgrades to LED lighting, internal decoration of the lobby and cyber centre, and essential repairs to the building’s windows. The iconic cupola on the roof has also undergone improvement works, with stonework repairs and archive storage system upgrades continuing behind the scenes.

While the majority of the works have now concluded, a final phase focused on restoring the mosaic floor tiles in the library’s lobby is still underway. The timeline for completion will depend on the extent of repairs required, though the project remains on track for final sign-off in the coming weeks.

With the Ewart Library now reopened, visitors are invited to rediscover the building’s role as a cultural cornerstone for Dumfries—whether for research, reading, or simply enjoying the calm of a beautifully restored space in the heart of the town.
