New Deputy Lieutenant for Dumfries

It’s been announced that Andrea Thompson has been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Dumfries. Andrea has been part of the region for 14 years and is well known locally; working for DG life Magazine, acting with the Theatre Royal’s Guild of Players and taking part in Guid Nychburris ceremonies as a Baillie. She has been a member of various boards in the region, and is also a volunteer presenter with community radio station Alive 107.3.

Fiona Armstrong, Lord Lieutenant for Dumfries, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Andrea to the team. She knows the area inside out and is an active and enthusiastic member of the community. She will be a great asset in helping to represent The Queen in Dumfriesshire.”

Issued on behalf of the Lieutenancy

The Lieutenancy of Dumfries can have up to fifteen Deputy Lieutenants. Andrea’s appointment brings that number to eleven. A person may be appointed a Deputy Lieutenant if they have rendered appropriate service, for example, with the armed forces, and other public service or community roles.

In ancient times a DL’s role was to protect the crown militarily. Today deputies represent the Lord Lieutenant, The Queen’s personal representative, when he or she is away. Other duties include officiating at citizenship ceremonies, assessment of honours nominations and Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service awards. DLs may present 100th birthday cards, or Diamond wedding cards from The Queen. They attend Remembrance Day services. They can be present at official ceremonies and local events and they recommend people for attendance at royal garden parties.
