Take a trip into the stunning Lowther Hills and experience where there was once a thriving lead mining industry.
‘A fantastic wee museum and shop. Full of local history and associated gifts with mining and the like. Very pleasant and helpful staff. The gift shop is very well layed out.
Don’t forget to visit the tea shop. They have an excellent selection of freshly made hot and chilled food. The warm chilli/cheese scones are exceptional. The staff in cafe are very welcoming and offer to bring food to your table.
There is free biscuits for your 4 legged friends too.’ Graham M
‘We just wanted to have a quick look at the museum and ended up taking the tour, one of our best decisions on the whole trip. Excellent insights, a fun experience and we particularly liked the enthusiasm of our guide. Well worth it, thank you very much to the whole team.’ Reto M
The museum walks you through the story of lead and the ingenious methods used by the miners high in the hills using rainwater for power. You can take a guided tour through history with a visit to the old miners’ cottages and see you the people lived in 1750, 1850 and 1920. Putting on your hard helmet our guide will take you into the unique Lochnell MIne. It is a flat wallk – no ladders! The Miners’ Library is nearly 270 years old – come and share the space where many hands turned the pages of the varied books trying to quench their thirst for knowledge.
There will be time for refreshment in our tearoom and even some inspiration for early seasonal shopping in the gift shop!
Parking is free and there is an overflow carpark 200m along the road. There is also an EV charger by the Visitor Centre.
