Dumfries and Galloway Regional Primary Schools Sportshall Athletics Finals 2016

Children from primary schools across Dumfries and Galloway travelled to Dumfries College on Monday to compete in the Dumfries and Galloway Primary Schools Regional Sportshall Athletics Finals.

Eight schools assembled teams totalling over 200 children to take part in the regional final which is an exciting indoor programme of adapted athletics activities with the winner progressing to the West of Scotland Regional Finals. Primary schools taking part who had qualified from area events and trials included Newington and Hecklegirth from Annan, Moffat, Loreburn and Laurieknowe from Dumfries, Castle Douglas, Penninghame for Newton Stewart and Rephad Primary School from Stranraer.

 

The event which is part of the Primary Schools PEPAS sporting calendar across the region saw children take part in numerous track events including short and middle distance, relay races, obstacle relay and field events including standing long jump, vertical jump and the speed bounce. The event was supported by students from sporting coaching courses at the college.

After a full morning of exciting competition the team who scored the most points and who therefore progressed to the West of Scotland Regional Final in Greenock on the 24th February was Newington Primary School from Annan. Presentations were made by Carol Turnbull, Principal at the college to Newington Primary who came first with 163 points followed Moffat Primary School with 142 points. Penninghame Primary School from Newton Stewart came third with 101 points with Laurieknowe Primary School from Dumfries finishing 4th with 94 points.

Chairperson of Community and Customer Services, Councillor Tom McAughtrie said, “This regional final was preceded by area qualifying events and trials that give all schools the opportunity to experience the exciting sport of Sportshall Athletics. It is great to see so many children competing not just today but also the many more that experienced the activity leading up to this event. We give our very best wishes to Newington Primary when they travel to Greenock in three weeks’ time.

Lead Officer for Active Schools and Community Sport, Calum Graham thanked Dumfries College for hosting the event and the students from the college who helped deliver the track and field events for over 200 children and congratulated all schools for their effort and performance.
