Gatehouse of Fleet’s historic bowling club celebrated the start of an exciting new era on Saturday, 20 June 2026, when members gathered for a successful soft opening of the newly re-established club.
Established in 1835, Gatehouse Bowling Club has been an important part of community life for generations and proudly holds the distinction of being the 13th oldest bowling club in the country. Throughout its long history, the club has provided recreation, friendship and sporting opportunities for local residents.
In recent years, however, limited financial resources meant that only minimal maintenance could be carried out, placing the future of the club in doubt. Determined to preserve this valued community asset, local supporters came together to form a new committee and secure the club’s future.
The year 2026 marks a significant turning point, with renewed community backing, fresh enthusiasm and a shared commitment to restoring the club to its former prominence.
The soft opening on Saturday was attended by members and supporters and proved to be a great success. During the event, James Cruickshanks delivered an address reflecting on the club’s rich heritage and the importance of ensuring its continued place within the community.
The official opening of the green was carried out by honorary member Evelyn Carnochan, who had the honour of rolling the first jack, symbolically marking the beginning of this new chapter in the club’s history.
The occasion was one of optimism and celebration, with members looking forward to building a thriving future while honouring nearly two centuries of sporting tradition. With a dedicated committee now in place and growing community support, Gatehouse Bowling Club is well positioned to continue serving the town for many years to come.
