DIZZY HEIGHTS FOR LOCKERBIE DREAMERS

A dozen young women from the region have recently completed Dreams2Reality8.

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Community Learning and Development Service in Annandale and Eskdale have been working in partnership with Lockerbie Academy to deliver the transition programme for girls in S4.

The aim of the programme is to develop confidence and self-esteem with a view to preparing the young women for the next stage of their lives.

The programme is developed in line with the needs of the participants and through taking part these young women have learned about:

Options available to them in S4
What potential employers are expecting from them
Identifying and developing employability skills
Training in interview processes and techniques
Team work and communication
Inspirational women

The group also attended a field trip to Dumfries and Galloway College, where they learnt about the link between school and further education and the opportunities available to them at their local college.

At the end of the session the girls hosted an event to present what they have been involved in, what they have learned and what they have achieved. Parents, other significant people in the lives of the young women and partner organisations were invited to help them celebrate their success.

Councillor Tom McAughtrie, who is Chair of the Council’s Community and Customer Services Committee said;

“This is a fantastic programme which helps young women to prepare for the next stage of their lives. I would like to congratulate the participants and encourage as many people as possible to take part in this and similar programmes run by our Council’s CLD Service.”

The participants on the Dreams2Reality8 were suitably impressed by the course;

“Thanks to this course I have more of an idea what I want to do in the future.”

Another participant commented;

“I would never have made these new friends had I not been Part of this group.”
