Big Burns Supper and Electric Theatre Workshop are honoured with royal recognition
Leading figures from Big Burns Supper and the Electric Theatre Workshop have been invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
BBS is responsible for the Dumfries festival and street carnival which take place each annually around Rabbie Burns’ birthday, while ETW organises a wide variety of community-based theatre and performance activities.
Graham Main, who has been invited to the sparkling event in Edinburgh for his work with both organisations, said he will seize the opportunity to promote Dumfries and all it has to offer.
He said: “We are all very proud of Dumfries and the way the community here works together to achieve things. There’s a lot to celebrate and a lot to tell people about.”
Graham is even wondering if Her Majesty might enjoy paying Dumfries a visit to celebrate Burns Night.
He said: “I’ve been told she is a fan of the Bard’s poetry, so if I get the opportunity I will certainly ask if she would like to come along to see our Burn’s Night Carnival, and perhaps even take in one of the Big Burns Supper shows.”
Others invited to the garden party on 1 July are BBS Chair Maureen Farrell, ETW Associate Director Justin Hyslop and BBS Volunteer Co-Ordinater Moira Priestley.
Moira, who is a social worker, was this year honoured by the Prime Minister with one of his Point of Light awards in recognition of her achievements in encouraging hundreds of people to volunteer for BBS.
ETW recently organised Waterloo Sunset, a puppet performance for children to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and convened the annual Guid Nychburris Day Parade.
Preparations for the 2016 Big Burns Supper and street carnival are also currently underway.
