Finlay Carson MSP Praises Support for Terminally ill People

Finlay Carson MSP heard about the care available for residents in Dumfries and Galloway living with a terminal illness and their families, praising the support provided by Marie Curie, the terminal illness charity.

At a meeting with Marie Curie staff on 7 April 2017, Finlay discussed the work of Marie Curie across his constituency of Galloway and West Dumfries. Local Marie Curie Nurses work night and day providing hands-on care and vital emotional support enabling families to be cared for and to die at home, where that is their choice and appropriate for them.

In 2015/16 in NHS Dumfries and Galloway, 444 people were supported in 3,733 nursing visits. The charity provided care and support for more than 8,000 people living with a terminal illness through its hospices in Glasgow and Edinburgh and the Nursing Service across Scotland. The Marie Curie Helper Service also provides one-to-one emotional support, companionship and information about relevant local services to people living with terminal illnesses, and their families and carers, with 20 active volunteers supporting people through this service in Dumfries and Galloway.

Finlay also expressed his support for the charity’s fundraising groups in Dumfries and Galloway who are hard at work making sure Marie Curie are able to continue caring for people in their local area.

Finlay Carson, MSP for Galloway and West Dumfries said:

It was fantastic to have the opportunity to meet with Marie Curie to learn more about the work that they are doing across Galloway and West Dumfries. Marie Curie nurses and volunteers work tirelessly to support people suffering from a terminal illness and I was heartened to hear of the great work they are doing.”

Georgia Ramplin, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Dumfries & Galloway and South Lanarkshire said:

“We were delighted to speak to Finlay about the difference that local fundraising helps provide to his constituents. Volunteering or joining a fundraising group is a really great way to raise funds locally for Marie Curie while also meeting new people and having lots of fun.
