Major Search Of The River Nith Stood Down – Dumfries

Police Scotland now report that the search of the River Nith in Dumfries following a report earlier today of a sighting of a body floating past St Michaels Bridge in the town, has now been stood down.

A large scale search involving units from the Fire and Rescue Service, The Coastguard, Nith Inshore Rescue and Police Scotland was carried out on the river towards the estuary, however has so far drawn a blank.

Nith Inshore Rescue  reported that they were called at 11:00 today to assist HM Coastguard and Police in a search of the River Nith following a report of a person in the water in the vicinity of St Michaels Bridge.

On arrival at Whitesands the crew deployed the small boat “Cauley” and conducted a search downstream prior to further search activity with colleagues from Coastguard Rescue Teams and boats from the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service.

The search was stood down after 14:00. There will now be a watching brief on the area over the coming hours and days.
