At a recent Planning, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, Councillors agreed £1.1 million to fund a project to transform Central Avenue in Gretna.
The Gretna Masterplan which was adopted in 2008 following extensive consultation, identified the need to define the area around Central Avenue and Kirtle Place as the settlement centre. This view was echoed by the Gretna Regeneration Steering Group which is made up of representatives of Gretna Green and Springfield Community Council and Gretna and Rigg Community Council plus local business representatives and local Councillors.
The main vision for the project is to revitalise this central space to reflect a ‘garden village’ with new tree planting and landscaping which will include hedge planting and grass seeding. Quality materials will be used throughout creating a much more pleasant area which was supported by local businesses during one of the early consultation meetings.
Councillor Craig Peacock, Vice Chair of the Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee said
“At a time when other local authorities are shying away from regeneration projects, I am delighted this project has been given the go ahead. When complete, it will physically link several green spaces and be a far more attractive place for locals and visitors to spend time. I am hopeful that businesses in the vicinity benefit from increased footfall as a result of the revitalisation.”
