D&G Roads Policing Inspector “Disappointed” With Number of Festive Offences

With plenty of ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ warnings sent out via the media before and during the festive season there has still been 11 drivers caught across Dumfries and Galloway under the influence of drink or drugs, although this is lower than last years total the Roads Policing Inspector for Dumfries and Galloway Campbell Moffat was still “Disappointed”.

Roads Policing Inspector for Dumfries and Galloway Campbell Moffat said “I am disappointed to report that despite the numerous messages from Police Scotland in relation to this year’s Festive Drink / Drug Drive campaign, posted via various media outlets before and throughout the duration of the campaign, a number of selfish motorists in the region demonstrated a total disregard for their own safety and the safety of others by choosing to ignore the message and drive whilst under the influence of drink or drugs. They will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal and face the prospect of court, being disqualified from driving, heavily fined and in some cases forfeiture of their vehicles. 11 drivers were caught during this year’s campaign as opposed to 13 who were caught during the same period the previous year. Whilst a slight decrease, it is still 11 drivers too many. A number of these drivers were caught during the campaign thanks to the support Police Scotland received from the local public.
” Although the campaign has since concluded, we will continue to focus on detecting and reporting those drivers who put their own lives and the lives of others at risk by drinking and driving and I ask members of the public to continue to report anyone who they suspect of driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs by calling Police Scotland on 999, in an emergency. Alternatively you can also call us on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The message is clear – don’t risk it.”
