Police Investigate As Stolen Car Found On Fire – Lockerbie

Police Officers in Lockerbie are investigating the theft of a car from the town which was later found burning near to Gillenbie, Balgray, on Wednesday 21 February 2018.

Sometime just prior to 9pm on Wednesday night a 26 year old local man was cleaning his car, a black coloured BMW 335i M Sport Auto at a garage unit in Bridge Street in Lockerbie. At that time he was alone in the garage, when the following described man entered the premises, took the car keys and then drove off in the car. The car was later found on fire near to Gillenbie, Balgray. The fire was extinguished by the Fire and Rescue Service, however was extensively damaged. The value of the car is around £15,000. The man who took the car is only described as wearing a dark coloured hooded type top with a dark coloured scarf or balaclava over his face. He spoke with what is described as a local Scottish accent.

Detective Constable Jim Murray said “this is an unusual type of crime for our area and we are asking the public for their help to catch those responsible. We are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in or around the Bridge Street area in Lockerbie on Wednesday evening, around 9pm, either before or after. Likewise we want to hear from anyone who may have used the Corrie Road out of Lockerbie on Wednesday night, between 9pm and 10pm. The car was found on fire around 9.35 pm near to Gillenbie , which is just off the Corrie Road, heading towards Sibbaldbie. We are particularly interested in hearing about anyone walking, or any vehicles seen on this road around this time.
