Woman Robbed Whilst Parked on Hard Shoulder – A74 – Near Johnstonebridge

Police in Dumfries are continuing enquiries after a woman was robbed whilst parked on the hard shoulder of the M74 motorway near to Johnstonebridge on Friday 9 March 2018.

Between 6.30 pm and 7 pm on Friday 9 March, the 32-year-old woman was driving a white coloured Volkswagen car south between junctions 16 and 17 on the A74 when she noticed she had a flat tyre. She pulled over to the hard shoulder approximately 3-4 miles south of Johnstonebridge and got out of the car to phone for assistance from the SOS telephone box before returning to her car.

At this time a small silver car stopped and three people got out of the car and offered assistance. The 32-year-old woman got out of her car to speak to them when one of the men pushed her back into her car, grabbed her by the neck and demanded money. The man then stole a three figure sum of cash from her purse along with her mobile phone before getting back into the silver car and driving off with the other two people in a southerly direction along the motorway.

The victim then returned to the SOS telephone box to report the robbery.

The suspect who grabbed and pushed her back into her car is described as white, tall with a muscular build and had short brown hair. There is no information to describe the other two suspects.

Detective Sergeant Andy McDowall at Dumfries CID said:

“This was a very traumatic experience for a young woman to endure and it is vital that we trace the despicable individuals responsible.

“I appeal to any drivers who were travelling on the A74 around junctions 16 and 17 and may have witnessed this incident or anyone who saw the small silver car in the vicinity around 7pm last night to contact police immediately via telephone number 101 quoting incident number 3610 of 9 March 2018.”
