Work is underway on a programme of improvement works designed to transform parts of Gretna Green and Springfield.
Work should take around four months to complete and includes:-
- Enhancing community seating area at Headless Cross
- Creating new community seating area at Westgill Road
- The creation of four sandstone Gateway features designed to mark the key entrances to Gretna Green and Springfield
- Tree planting on Gretna Loaning and in Springfield
- Improvements to the footway at Stormont Terrace
Councillor Craig Peacock, Vice Chair of the Council’s Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, said, “I am delighted that work has started to transform and revitalise public space in Gretna Green and Springfield. Gretna Green attracts visitors from all over the world and this will be a much more attractive setting for them and for locals to enjoy.”
The project has been developed by Dumfries and Galloway Council and the CX Project in consultation with the Gretna Regeneration Steering Group. The improvement plans are based on the Gretna Master plan which was produced following extensive community engagement. The Master plan recognised that Gretna Green has an international profile and it is important that the local environment reflects this.
The works are being funded by Dumfries and Galloway Council and are costing around £250,000. This is being funded through the Council’s Capital Programme which is specifically for this type of project.
The Gretna Regeneration Steering Group is made up of regional and Community council members and business representatives
