group of 16 Ramblers set off from The Sill ( an impressive National Landscape Discovery Centre) to walk up the hill to Steel Rigg. From there they walked a stretch of Hadrian’s wall eastwards to Housteads. They passed Sycamore Gap on the way. This is now a sorry sight since the felling of the tree, but at least there are saplings planted to replace it. The wall along this stretch is at its most impressive as it has been built along the cliffs formed by the Whin Sill (a volcanic intrusion). It would have looked impregnable to attacking armies or groups from the north!
From Housteads the group returned south via Vindolanda, another landmark site just south of the wall. There is an active dig still in progress here but sadly we didn’t have time to explore. The group also came across a limekiln which is a reminder of the importance of this industry for the building trade and for agriculture in times gone by. After a quick drink at the Milecastle Inn the group headed home. Thankyou Terry for a grand day out.
On Sunday Stuart led a smaller group of Ramblers on a fine walk around the extensive grounds at Drumlanrig Castle. The group shot was taken with the castle in the background.
