This week sees the start of the annual Newton Stewart Walking festival.
The festival is now one of the longest running such festivals in Scotland, attracting participants from across the UK and even some from overseas. The week long programme of over 30 walks and evening events runs from 8 to 14 May.
Walking Festival chair Joan Mitchell said: “Our programme once again offers something for everyone, from full day hikes in the Galloway Hills to a selection easier routes exploring Galloway’s countryside, woodlands and coast. We also have another exciting programme of evening events. On Saturday 9 May we will hear about the work by Forest and Land Scotland to protect the native woodlands of the Glen Trool area and on Tuesday 12 May we will be in conversation with author Lawrie Johnston about his two historical novels based around, and inspired by, Galloway. Both evening events start at 7.30pm in McMillan Hall, Newton Stewart, and are open to all.”
The full festival programme is available on the festival’s website www.walkfestnewtonstewart.com. Bookings can be made online via the website, with limited spaces available. You can also keep up to date via the festival’s Facebook page.
This year’s festival has been possible due to generous support of WRDC Enterprise Trust and Stewart R Cunningham Outdoor Centre as well as great assistance from Galloway Mountain Rescue Team and Wigtownshire Ramblers. The festival is an event certified as supporting the principles of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere. Newton Stewart is one of only a handful of places in Scotland designated as a Walkers Are Welcome town, so a warm welcome is assured.
